jlsarmy
McFadden would have been a panic signing and another Stevenson but I am concerned that Archibald can't see the defensive weaknesses in the team by targetting an attacker. We'd have at least 6 more points this season with better defenders. Are you seriously comparing McFadden with Stevenson ? , one has 48 caps for Scotland and probably one of the best our country has produced in the last 10 years , the other well you make your mind up. McFadden was at best a decent English Championship player and at worse vastly over rated. He was in and out a mediocre Everton team and an even worse Birmingham team, and then couldn't even get an English club. When he was younger he was a better player than Stevenson is now though. I'll give you that.
Lindau
Aparently he is on £5k or £6k a week at St J, not sure if it's a pay per play, we couldn't afford that and would be mental to spend that on a short term deal with no resale value Well if that is indeed the case I am glad he didn't sign
Bleeding Gums Murphy
It doesn't necessarily mean our budget is gone, it far more likely means he was asking for more than we could risk. Our budget has gone. We overspent last January & that along with the signings of certain boys from down South means there was no budget to offer McFadden anything. Aparently he is on £5k or £6k a week at St J, not sure if it's a pay per play, we couldn't afford that and would be mental to spend that on a short term deal with no resale value He's on that a month there. Not a week.

How could we overspend, any spending would be sanctioned by Maxi and the board and when done, Archie can't bring people in. We were also told at end of season the budget was being increased, so Erskine, Taylor, ATS, Mair all leaving would have added to the available (increased) budget. As for Mcfadens wage it's most definetly not that a month (unless it's pay per play and he only plays once a month)as that's what some of our players are on and would probably be achievable and he could have been signed (if Archie wanted him) instead of Ecclestone for that

That works out at around £1,400 a week, if you say there's 8 full months left of the season.

Everton were a top 6 team 3 of the seasons McFadden was there hardly mediocre , he scored an average of 1 goal in every 3 for Scotland ( 15 goals) , Stevenson was an ok player for Ayr United , there is no comparison. Re Stevenson/McFadden Who reportedly had the better form last season? Back in May/June/July if you asked the average Motherwell fan who would they like to sign for next season would the majority have said McFadden? Back in May/June/July if you asked the average Motherwell fan who would they like to sign for next season would the majority have said McFadden? Having spoke to some Motherwell fans , there was a fall out between McCall and McFadden . Mcfadden was getting played on the wing instead of through the centre where he preferred , by his own admission he had an inconsistent season , injuries etc . McFadden is a year older than Stevenson their careers show no parallel whatsoever.

BowenBoys
Having not read the article, i wouldn't say it was Archie specifically who was "putting the deal together". He will have gone to the board and said... i've watched him over X amount of weeks, i want to add him to the squad. Its then down to which ever directors are responsible for that. The worrying part is that we were "putting a deal together". and therefore opens the questions... How long ago did Archie go to the Board and tell them he wanted McFadden? When did the Board say, yes there are funds available? When did we contact his agent? How long does it take to "put a deal together" at Firhill? TAG/Centenary Fund are the public face of PTFC admin. We will have to draw our own conclusions as to how smoothly it works in private.
