It was a truly terrific performance from the wee man, and in the sunshine it was a great game overall. I've always thought it was a shame that there's no video of that game and of the Scottish Cup semi-final draw against the same mob a few years later.

if there was a video available then i reckon i would watch it more frequently than The Producers. and that was a rangers' team that went on to defeat sporting lisbon, torino and bayern munich among others on their way to winning the european cup-winners' cup later in the season.

the official attendance was 30,000 - i seem to recall there was at least that number crammed into the old, rickety press box up in the rafters  in the excellent main (now colin west) stand....

Was he not subbed at half time after being kicked black and blue by Willie Mathieson?

That rings a bell, J. Not sure if it was at half-time, but I don't think he lasted the 90 min. The Thistle Archive probably has the info!

it was a brilliant individual performance from Johnnie Gibson...we lost an early goal but the wee man turned it round with two goals and an assist...he failed to make it out for the second half after being the victim of brutal hacking by John "the Greatest Living Ranger" Greig...I don't think Mathieson could get close enough to Johnnie to kick him.

That performance set up the team for the phenomenal achievements over the next 3 months.

Bottom right is Donnie McKinnon, I assume that was a typo 😀

Some decent players but we struggled under Lamont. I didn’t realise the Beast was back when we wore that strip.

Donnie McK was my thought too.

By 40 or so years ago the art of defending had already evolved into simply standing with your hand in the air.

I’m seeing Jags Colin McAdam, Bobby Houston, Alan Rough and George Mackie, foiling Jag (with a small j), Derek Johnson.

I think he was initially marked by a guy called Jim Denny who was humiliated by Johnny.

Cant remember if Denny was subbed but others then disgracefully took it in turn to kick Johnny off the park.

A magnificent performance and one of my favourite games.
