Is today the first occasion where both Thistle and the opposition team have failed to fill their substitutes bench?

Well, we can say it's categorically the first such occurrence in competitive action this century.

My first trip-wire comes in the summer of '99 with the Motorolla Cup. For one game I've only got 2 out of 3 Jags on the bench and I'm missing oppositions line-ups. I then have similar gaps from 1996-97 backwards.

You'd have to think it's a near-certainty that this has never happened when subs were limited to one (1966-1973) then two players (1973-1994) back when these positions were absolutely crucial parts of the line-up. The three only came to be as recently as 1994-95.

So based on the above and the actual data from 97-98 onwards, my hunch would be that it's the first occurrence ever.

:detective: 23.04.2016 Partick Thistle 1 Dundee 2 (SPFL Premiership - game 34)

  • Thistle's last two Premiership matches have been handled by Nick Walsh. Adding to the strangeness is the fact that these are also the whistler's only two Premiership games. He's the first ref to take charge of two consecutive Thistle matches since Des Roache handled two games against Culter over the course of conscutive Saturday's in November 2011. Back in October 2010, David Somers took charge of our 8th and 9th League games of the season, away to Ross County and at home to Falkirk.
  • Personal-best competitive Thistle-game appearance runs of 28 (for Dan Seaborne) and 46 (for Callum Booth) come to an end due to suspension.
  • Somewhat pathetically, Thistle have only scored first-half goals in 2 of the last 20 matches.
  • Kris Doolan takes his competitive goals tally into double figures for the 6th consecutive season, becoming only the second man in history to do so. Jimmy Walker's 62-year-old record of 7-in-a-row is now in his sights!
  • Doolan's goal is the 8th consecutive Jags goal at the Bing end.
  • Thistle have only scored one solitary goal in front of the North Stand in the last 5 months.
  • For the first time in history, Thistle have lost 3 home League games to the same team in the same season. Compounding the pain of this pitiful stat is the fact that, visits to Firhill excepted, Dundee are 17 competitive away fixtures without a win.
  • Thistle are on a 22-year-run of 14 top-flight games without a win versus Dundee. Albert Craig's winner in a 1-0 Firhill win in April '94 stands as the last time we had any joy against them at this level.
  • Thistle will become mathematically safe from relegation should they gain one more point than Kilmarnock next Saturday.

ongoing sequences:

  • 8 competitive games without a first-half goal, 5th Mar 2016 to date. (Longest run since: 8 games; 27th Oct 2013 to 26th Dec 2013.)
  • 36 consecutive competitive appearances for Steven Lawless, 9th Aug 2015 to date. (Longest run since: Callum Booth - 46 games; 14th Mar 2015 to 9th Apr 2016. Club-record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games; 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.)
  • 46 competitive away games without a penalty award, 1st Mar 2014 to date. (Longest run since: 64 games; 17th Apr 1948 to 3rd Mar 1951. Club-record: 73 games; 1st Apr 1911 to 7th Nov 1914. *)

* These streaks are perceived and not categoric, and should therefore be considered with some degree of caution. In their favour, two independent researchers have looked carefully at press reports which cover virtually all of the matches from the time. It's entirely possible, however, that penalties may have went unreported or, indeed, are noted in alternative press reports which have not yet come to the attention of the researchers.

MAGNIFICENT DOOLAN!

16quc3.jpg

· Left: Kris starts his historical run in August 2010 by putting Ian McCall’s Jags one-nil up at Central Park. Right: Scott Bain realises resistance is futile as deadly Dools heads Thistle level in yesterday’s game.

The double-figures goals tally in competitive action has long been a satisfying mark for any given player in any given season. The achievement itself isn’t too remarkable – I reckon Doolan’s effort for 2015-16 is the 269th occurrence. In fact, since John Gilchrist registered his 13 known-goals tally in 1892-93, no fewer than 131 others have got in on the act.

However, as you line them up and see who manages to maintain the feat season after season, they start to drop like flies.

So much so that this weekend, Kris further cements his place in the history books by becoming only the second Thistle player in history to register double-figures in our competitive goal-scoring charts for SIX consecutive seasons.

Season 073 1947-48 - Jimmy Walker - 13 goals

Season 074 1948-49 - Jimmy Walker - 24 goals

Season 075 1949-50 - Jimmy Walker - 27 goals

Season 076 1950-51 - Jimmy Walker - 13 goals

Season 077 1951-52 - Jimmy Walker - 14 goals

Season 078 1952-53 - Jimmy Walker - 18 goals

Season 079 1953-54 - Jimmy Walker - 11 goals

Season 136 2010-11 - Kris Doolan - 18 goals

Season 137 2011-12 - Kris Doolan - 13 goals

Season 138 2012-13 - Kris Doolan - 15 goals

Season 139 2013-14 - Kris Doolan - 11 goals

Season 140 2014-15 - Kris Doolan - 10 goals

Season 141 2015-16 - Kris Doolan - 10+ goals?

Doolan’s record is all the more remarkable when you look at his game-time stats – he has averaged only 59 minutes-per-game in his 273 competitive appearances for Thistle. This season, he’s actually up to 61 minutes-per-game! By comparison, Jimmy Walker’s average game-time will be touching the 90 minute mark!

The double-figures feat is a great testament to Kris’s consistency over the period; they may not have flooded in on a weekly basis, but those goals have been delivered surely and steadily with no let up, second tier or top-flight.

You don’t need to be a keen student of Thistle’s history to know that this sort of achievement is as rare as a comet, something which you’re privileged to see happening in your lifetime.

So, Jimmy Walker has the record with 7-seasons-in-a-row. What price our old American hero will be forced to share his 63-year-old record at some stage in season 2016-17?

For the moment, let’s just say – very well done Kris, you can be rightly proud of this particular achievement!

Re the "Hogan" definition. In Hogan's defence he only played three of the Majors in 1953, winning all of them, because he missed the PGA Championship as he was sailing back to the States after winning the Open at Carnoustie.

Strange to relate I am currently in the middle of reading Jimmy Demaret's book on Hogan.

There's a mention on another thread about managing 2 teams in one year when both got relegated (Dundee United and York in this case). Anyone know if the "treble" has ever been done ? A double I remember was by Billy McNeil - Man City and Aston Villa I think ... ?

I dunno what the rest of the world is like for these things but in the UK a double seems mega rare so a UK treble seems extremely unlikely.

I can find four doubles:

Ron Saunders (Birmingham City, West Bromwich Albion in 1985-86)

Billy McNeill (Man City, Aston Villa in 1986-87)

Dave Bassett (Watford, Sheffield United in 1987-88)

Gary Johnson (Yeovil Town, Cheltenham Town in 2014-15)

I assume you mean season as opposed to "year" (we don't want to unnecessarily tarnish our current head of youth development :) )

Anyway I think the double in one season is difficult enough. Try hard as he did I don't even think Jim Duffy managed that achievement.

and we have at least another three years of this to look forward to :happy2:

No, he managed a club that went out of business, and then subsequently managed a new club which most definitely wasn't the same club three divisions below.

:detective: 30.04.2016 Partick Thistle 1 Inverness CT 4 (SPFL Premiership - game 35)

  • Thistle have failed to score a first-half goal in 38 out of their last 47 competitive matches, an occurrence which now seems to be majorly ingrained as a long-term failing. Such a run is completely unprecedented in the club's history.
  • As it stands, Thistle have failed to score in the first-half of 78.9% of this season's competitive matches (30 out of 38). The existing record, 70.2% (33 out of 47), was set in season 2007-08. The only way this record will not be broken is if Thistle's season is extended and we score in all of the next 5 first-half's.
  • The current run of 9 games without a first-half goal is the longest since Ian McCall's Jags registered an 11 game run in April 2008.
  • Kris Doolan gets his 78th League goal and now sits jointly with George Smith as the 4th highest scorer for Thistle in the SFL / SPL / SPFL chart. 13 more goals will see the No.9 become the club's all-time highest scorer in the SFL / SPL / SPFL.
  • In terms of this season's Premiership, of all those who have scored 5 or more, only Leigh Griffiths, Kane Hemmings and Adam Rooney have a greater goals-per-minute ratio than Kris Doolan.
  • When he formally confirms his place as our top League scorer in 2015-16, Kris will become the first Thistle player in history to finish as our outright top League scorer in five different seasons.
  • Doolan's goal is the 9th consecutive Jags goal at the Bing end.
  • For the first time in history, a side from Inverness scores 4 against Partick Thistle. The 3-goal margin equals the overall H2H record loss against ICT and smashes the home H2H record loss against them, our heaviest home loss previously being just by one goal.
  • Thistle will be mathematically safe from relegation should they win at Rugby Park next Saturday.

ongoing sequences:

  • 9 competitive games without a first-half goal, 5th Mar 2016 to date. (Longest run since: 11 games; 15th Mar 2008 to 26th Apr 2008.)
  • 37 consecutive competitive appearances for Steven Lawless, 9th Aug 2015 to date. (Longest run since: Callum Booth - 46 games; 14th Mar 2015 to 9th Apr 2016. Club-record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games; 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.)
  • 46 competitive away games without a penalty award, 1st Mar 2014 to date. (Longest run since: 64 games; 17th Apr 1948 to 3rd Mar 1951. Club-record: 73 games; 1st Apr 1911 to 7th Nov 1914. *)

Doolan secures his Hogan against Kilmarnock by scoring in 3 of the 4 games. He is going for a second Hogan against Dundee United on Tuesday and Matthias can round off with a Hogan against Hamilton on Saturday.

10 out of 12 points on plastic pitches is a great return for the season. Might that change any thoughts as regards an artificial surface at Firhill?

Easy to miss given the poor run we've been on. But that's doolan scored in three consecutive games. What's his best? Has he ever done four?

Yesterday was the fifth time the No.9 has done 3-in-a-row. He's never done a 4...

28.08.2010 Cowdenbeath [a] L1-2 (SFL First Division - game 4) 1 goal

04.09.2010 Ayr United [h] W2-1 (Challenge Cup Quarter Final) 2 goals

11.09.2010 Stirling Albion [h] L1-2 (SFL First Division - game 5) 1 goal

21.02.2012 Ayr United [h] W4-2 (SFL First Division - game 23) 2 goals

25.02.2012 Raith Rovers [a] L1-2 (SFL First Division - game 24) 1 goal

03.03.2012 Hamilton Academical [h] W2-0 (SFL First Division - game 25) 1 goal

23.03.2013 Livingston [h] W6-1 (SFL First Division - game 27) 1 goal

27.03.2013 Cowdenbeath [a] W3-0 (SFL First Division - game 28) 2 goals

30.03.2013 Cowdenbeath [a] W2-1 (SFL First Division - game 29) 2 goals

21.11.2015 Inverness CT [h] W2-1 (SPFL Premiership - game 15) 1 goal

28.11.2015 Kilmarnock [a] W5-2 (SPFL Premiership - game 16) 2 goals

12.12.2015 Dundee United [a] W1-0 (SPFL Premiership - game 17) 1 goal

23.04.2016 Dundee [h] L1-2 (SPFL Premiership - game 34) 1 goal

30.04.2016 Inverness CT [h] L1-4 (SPFL Premiership - game 35) 1 goal

07.05.2016 Kilmarnock [a] W2-0 (SPFL Premiership - game 36) 1 goal

Trigger McLean still sits proudly with the club-record of 8-games-in-a-row set in 2000.

:detective: 07.05.2016 Kilmarnock 0 Partick Thistle 2 (SPFL Premiership - game 36)

  • With Callum Booth's absence, Steven Lawless and David Amoo now sit on top of the competitive appearances chart for 2015-16 with 38 outings each. Both players are currently on impressive personal-best unbroken appearance runs; Stevie with 38 and David with 32.
  • Thistle win both halves of a match for the first time since... our last trip to Rugby Park in November!
  • Steven Lawless bags his 5th goal of the season - all left-footers from outside of the box, carrying on his established pattern from last season. Stevie hasn't lowered himself to scoring from inside the box since September 2014 vs ICT in front of the Northy.
  • Abdul Osman becomes the 3rd Jag to register an assist double this season. All 5 of his assists this term have came in 2016, with 3 in the last 3 games.
  • The amazing Kris Doolan now takes his place as Thistle's highest League goal scorer (79) since Willie Sharp, who played his last game for the club more than 59 years ago in February, 1957.
  • Kris Doolan is the first Jag to net in three consecutive top-flight games since, er, Kris Doolan in December 2015. James Grady was the last Jag to go further in the top-flight, registering 4-in-a-row in May 2004.
  • Kris bags the first "Hogan" since Stevie Lawless did it to the Pars in season 2012-2013.
  • Kris becomes the first Jag in history to register 3 Hogans; vs QOS 11-12; vs Ayr Utd 11-12; vs Kilmarnock 15-16.
  • Kilmarnock are now officially "most Hoganed", having suffered four times.
  • Freddy Frans improves his supreme clean-sheet ratio with Thistle; now 9 in 20 competitive games for this season (45%) and 19 in 42 competitive games overall (45.2%).
  • The tractor-driving pie-munchers take their 67th top-flight beating from the Jags, cementing their place as our most-conquered opponent at this level.
  • Alan Archibald registers his 32nd top-flight victory as Thistle manager, surpassing Davie McParland's tally of 31. Next target: 6th placed John Lambie with 42 wins.
  • The Thistle have successfully survived the "third season back" in the top-flight 5 times out of 5; 1905, 1974, 1979, 1995 and 2016.
  • In 2016-17, Alan Archibald is now all-set to become the first manager since Bertie Auld to boss Thistle in four consecutive top-flight campaigns.
  • Wins at Tannadice on Tuesday and Firhill on Saturday would see Archie's Jags surpass Bertie Auld's post-reconstruction record of 1.31 points-per-game in the top-flight (with all eras calculated @ 3-points-per-win). 50 points would equate to a new post-reconstruction high of 1.32 points-per-game.

ongoing sequences:

  • 5 competitive games without a draw, 5th Apr 2016 to date. (Longest run since: 9 games; 2nd Feb 2016 to 19th Mar 2016. Club-record: 27 games; 18th Feb 1899 to 23rd Dec 1899.)
  • 7 competitive away games without a draw, 6th Feb 2016 to date. (Longest run since: 22 games; 7th Nov 2009 to 20th Nov 2010. Club-record: 24 games; 20th Sep 1995 to 17th Sep 1996.)
  • 38 consecutive competitive appearances for Steven Lawless, 9th Aug 2015 to date. (Longest run since: Callum Booth - 46 games; 14th Mar 2015 to 9th Apr 2016. Club-record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games; 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.)
  • 47 competitive away games without a penalty award, 1st Mar 2014 to date. (Longest run since: 64 games; 17th Apr 1948 to 3rd Mar 1951. Club-record: 73 games; 1st Apr 1911 to 7th Nov 1914. *)
