We had decent success earlier in the season from corners, now it just seems to be a hoof into the box & see what happens, rather than having any sort of planned target. The high floaty cross reminds me of Ian MacDonald'ds crosses in the 70s/80s. We never scored from them either. We need far more pace and whip on them. Bring back the Andy Anderson near post flick on , we got a dozens of goals from that or a pull back to the edge of the box for a dig at goal. jlsarmy Posted April 3, 2016 Report Share Posted April 3, 2016 Teams at our level should be on the training ground day after day practising , such a key part of the game just now with teams sitting in etc and getting goals from set pieces would be huge for us. If the delivery and movement is better we've got players like Frans , Liam , Seebourne to attack the ball and penalty box players like Doolan to sniff out chances. I don't believe it's just being on target that's missing from our corners. There's a lack of movement and anyone "taking a punt". Our two centrebacks yesterday could learn a thing or two from Liam Lindsay. He at least looks a threat and creates space for others to exploit. Fearchar Posted April 3, 2016 Report Share Posted April 3, 2016 The lack of movement in the danger area is not just a problem when corners are taken: often, our players accept a corner as the consolation for not capitalising on possession by opting for a cutback or even a shot, and that attitude is not acceptable, especially given that our corner taking is woeful anyway. partick monkey Posted April 3, 2016 Report Share Posted April 3, 2016 The only time I've ever seen thistle look dangerous from corners involved Balatoni bombing into the box to get in the end of a Ross Forbes pinpoint delivery. Doesn't make our record any better but does anyone know how many goals we've lost to set pieces against any successes this season? i know we've been caught out two or three times of late but I doubt we've been too poor defending them. He would have been good at the ol' american football when the kicker only comes on fir penaltys or witever its called. It would have been good to bring him on just for set pieces. Free kicks have also been poor all season (and for the past couple of season), both in terms of direct shots and getting it into the box. But similarly to our issue with penalties, the fact we don't play a lot of the game in the final third of the pitch means we don't seem to win as many threatening free-kicks as other teams. The majority of teams in Scotland fail to do so and it is pretty much the same south of the border. Teams with better players or different coaching methods very often take 'short corners' to take the ball back into open play and attempt to score that way.
