We Shouldn't Laugh, But

This is the darkest day in Scottish football......Celtic by far the champions of Scotland who regularly pee on Thistle year after year, get shattered by a works team. And we are laughing.....Remember Bath City and the big A Hole Pogba.... That's how low Scotland has fallen

I'm not biting for a moment other than to say that any of us can be serious about PTFC and still have a laugh (particularly when it involves the ugly sisters). In fact I could argue that for the benefit of sanity being serious about Thistle and having a laugh are inextricable.

So not knowing for certain if you're at the wind up or not either well done :thumbsup2: or  Boo!!!

I also believe this to be utterly hilarious!!

But it does go to show that it is just 11 v 11 and that with belief, all things are possible

Have a look for the Chris Coleman interview online where he says that fear is overrated. Why should a team worry so much about what the opposition could do to them, why not decide what we can do to them?

You should watch the 90mins of the Wales Belgium game. An example of hope against the odds. The positions taken up by the Welsh fullbacks Taylor and Gunter are extraordinary. They are so wide and attacking that it is awe inspiring

It has to be better than parking the bus or 4-6-0

Football is played with the head, not the feet.

Well Celtic at least saved their own faces and asses last night.

But Hearts.................................WTF!!!

Not to mention Hibs who managed to win away from home yet still went out. Not upset in the slightest these two conspired against the Jags to ensure we got relegated.

That was beyond a joke last night. Shocking indictment of where our game REALLY is in European terms. We are light years away from having a team in the group stages of either tournament.

The only real surprise is that Hibs ran Brondby as close as they did after losing goal on 16 seconds of the opening leg.

That Maltese team would struggle to survive in our 2nd tier over a whole season, and they've destroyed Hearts at their own "Fortress Tynecastle"

The only way I can ever see us genuinely competing in Europe again is if we switch to summer football. It means the players will be in the best possible shape by the time these qualifiers come around and will hopefully see us eventually move back up the co-efficient list.

How would that help?

I've been to a game in Malta, albeit 21 years ago.

They had a ten-team top league and only one grass park on the island - the National Stadium.

Every weekend they played all league games there - one on Friday evening, two on Saturday and two on Sunday.

You can imagine the state of the playing surface.

That is the standard that one of Scotland's "top" teams had just lost to.

Embarrassing really doesn't quite cover it!

On the up side, like pensioners and children, women got in for a concession price back then.

So I took the wife along... :-)

There's two ways to look at it:

If we were playing a summer league, our players would be in the middle of our season as the European qualifiers come around, and as a result at peak fitness, which would give a competitive edge over teams who are still in preseason and well off match sharpness. It's the argument that Scottish teams have used previously when coming up against the likes of Scandinavians early in European competition. I do think in terms of an immediate coefficient boost it would definitely helps us out.

On the other hand, you look at these aforementioned Summer league countries and their record in Europe is generally pretty bleak. Malmo, Astana and BATE have reached the group stages in recent years, but I'm struggling to think of any prolonged success from a Summer league country since Rosenborg were regulars over a decade ago, and even then they were only just making up the numbers most years. It's also worth looking at the countries moving from Summer to Winter football and vice versa - Denmark, Russia and Ukraine have all recently switched from a Summer programme to join the majority of the rest of Europe, because they felt it would help their league's competitiveness in continental competition. Take what you will from that

FWIW, I actually think Summer football could be the answer for Scottish football, but that's nothing to do with the argument about Europe.

I would much rather our teams were "making up the numbers" in the group stages of these competitions instead of getting put out by teams from Malta in July every year.

Unless we have a Leicester like miracle, getting to the group stages or at best last 16 of these competitions is the best we can ever hope for now, such is the imbalance of finances within the European game. So I don't really see how switching to a summer season could make things any worse than they are now.

Just an aside but I don't particularly want to see our clubs do well in Europe. If Scottish clubs get to enjoy longer runs in Europe then the financial gap between the fortunate clubs and the rest of the league will grow, increasing the chances of those clubs qualifying for Europe year on year. If it happens to be clubs like ICT, St Johnstone or Motherwell doing well in Europe then the effect on the likes of us would be noticeable. That's the imbalance that would concern me.

I can understand the logic of summer football helping our clubs in Europe get thru the early rounds tho' I suppose summer football would eventually work against the same clubs if they progressed too far. What I've thought for some time that was glaringly obvious regarding Celtic's Euro aspirations is that they'd have far greater chance of success if they did most of their transfer business and contracts in January. They would then at least kick off their European venture with a far more settled side.

I would be surprised if Malta play summer football - it is in the middle of the Med.

I never said they did - and it has nothing to do with the point I was making.

You are right. The inference through this thread is that Scottish teams are performing poorly against teams from countries that play in summer. And somehow it is their fitness levels that are making the difference.
