Sign him! To be honest 4-3-3 is a bit too defensive for my liking, I’d rather go down the Marcelo Bielsa route of 3-3-1-3, I hope Jaggie Mac was watching Chile in the world cup and taking notes! Erskine, Finnegan and Doolan up top with Stewart pulling the strings behind them, Rowson anchoring the middle of the ‘second 3’ with Bannigan and Hodge either side. Pass me a tissue. We have plenty of numbers up front, including one of the leagues leading scorers, but at the back, we have Archie, Wullie and Paul. I don't think that any of the youth team are ready to join the first team in defence and I doubt that Jackie will be a regular starter. We need a left back and a central defender minimum before we start looking at the front. Weatherston might be a good buy as he can play at the back as well as up front. Totally agree and I made that point myself a while back. I do think Archie and WK will be a decent partnership but we need cover for them plus a left back. The youngsters that really look like making it so far are all midfielders. As for the 4-3-3, it is exciting, but it hasn't been getting us the results. I know that we have injuries, but 1 win and 1 draw in 4 games along with 6 goals conceded is not promotion challenging form. Don't think we played 4-3-3 for every game and when we did it was a kind of forced on us. We shouldn't be short of competition for frontline places (Erskine can also play upfront). I don't think the manager (whoever he is) would turn his nose up at the chance of an experienced striker but I'd imagine it would necessitate one or maybe two of the younger players going out on loan. I wouldn't read too much into the results since Jackie took over. given our injuries and suspensions he's not once had a full squad to pick from. If so he was pretty good and even better he gave me the fingers after we gave him stick down the front of the stand, that makes him a good guy in my book! Don't know if your meaning at Firhill or the last game at Falkirk. I think tho' you're talking about Higginbotham who's none too popular with the Falkirk fans. They think he's too flash with little substance to his game. That may be true but he does see a lot of the ball and appears to have decent delivery Btw Finnegan's the clown that tried to get Archie sent off in an earlier game. Weatherston - no, fat, useless lump from what I saw at the last Morton game down at Crappielow. As an aside, I think Dunfermline are pretty disappointed with what they got in return for taking Buchanan's wages off us. Hardie they can't get enough of - obviously - but Buchanan apparently looks done, lazy etc etc. Loan out to Cowdenbeath for Liam next season? However a better signing would be Pat Clarke only 25 still likely to be getting towards his peak and if we signed him and he did well for us a good chance of getting a high selling fee. Dont know if Hamilton are having to make cut backs, but if we could would take Imrie from them though in all honestly can see him ending up at another SPL team. Dunfermline might offer Buchanan to us on a loan and if we were getting him for nothing would take him. He scored a couple in his earlier matches, but he's been getting hooked well before the end in more recent matches. It's not as if he's a youngster who needs to get toughened up, as he's already well experienced in the lower leagues. No I am marrying the love of my life at the end of September thanks and she aint a footballer. As for Clarke being rubbish well 9 goals in not a lot of games suggests he is far from rubbish, as good if not even better than McMenamin. Proved more than capable of scoring a barrowload of goals in the divison with a team as rubbish as Clyde. Other than Doolan cant see any of our other strikers scoring as many as him, maybe the young lads in a couple of years but not at present. hebridean jag Posted May 4, 2011 Report Share Posted May 4, 2011 I appreciate concerns about the defence next season esp with McNamara`s retirement but to be perfectly honest, this is something that can be dealt with with changes in personnel and formations (I still think Rowson would be terrific in a sweeper type roll). Up front it`s different and at the risk of repeating myself, the centre forward position is the most specialised on the park with the exception of goalkeeper. Every penny we have (and I know it`s pennies) should be directed towards this one signing once the selected existing contracts have been renewed. I don`t honestly care if it`s McMenamin, Clarke or whoever, I just know that our existing forwardline cannot score the goals needed to take the club forward. Again, remember it`s now a buyers market out there at the moment. Every player would prefer to have a club and few will take the chance of pricing themselves out the market as they know better than us that almost all clubs will only be making one or two signings at most. I would much rather see us signing some solid, experienced defenders who, with Fox behind them would give some of our midfielders the chance to get forward and support the front men. It may well be a buyers market, but we are skint and have to cut our cloth accordingly. But it also highlights how essential it is to have a good start - and I mean one that lasts a while, not just a game or two - because that will bring the fans back and they'll hang about (or at least come back quickly) if you have a bit of a down turn, as long as it doesn't last too long. But the other way round (like this season) you lose fans and they don't come back because you've already blown any chance of doing anything that season.
