jagfaelivi
Has there EVER been a Thistle team that has done anything off corners and free kicks. I hope Archie does an analysis of today's match to see just how awful we were when given an opportunity from a corner or a free kick. We would have been as well to give Hearts bye kicks or let them take our free kicks. I have heard it said often that teams who don't do much from open play are nevertheless dangerous from set pieces. Well we are NOT making chances from open play but we are even WORSE from our corners etc. And while I'm at it - how timid were we today? Amoo has the ability to just run and get a free kick but what does he do? Turn the ball back every time. Maybe on the latter I am doing Hearts an injustice and they closed us down so we couldn't make a forward pass. But look what young McDaid did when he came on. It might be a long season...... Metz
I seem to recall Conrad scoring a few in the Championship winning year however after those pathetic efforts today I share your pain and frustration. It's very disheartening that no matter how many times Fraser overplayed the ball beyond the last man neither he had the ability to adjust his kick nor his team mates the presence of mind or match management to expect it to happen again and position themselves wider than normal. jagfox
Freddie, Seaborne and Abzy all scored from headers off of set pieces last season. Higgy even got a couple of goals at least from free kicks over the last couple of seasons too.

Hopeless Unbeliever
Last season we scored 8 goals from set pieces, good for 6th in the SPL. Killie interestingly were in first place with 17, without Eremenko there is a lot of pressure on Higginbotham's set pieces.
lady-isobel-barnett
I think the OP has a point. Well about the free kicks over the last couple of decades anyway. My means of measurement is totally unscientific. How many times when we've given away a free kick just outside the box have you feared the worst? Not been the least surprised when the opposition score from it or heaved a huge sigh of relief when they didn't. Turn it around and how many times have we had a free kick just outside the box and you thought to yourself "I think we're going to score here"? When we don't just how surprised are you? Exceptions to the rule are few and far between. Big Boab certainly inspired confidence with his free kicks. I can also mind one occasion when Harkins scored a screamer away to Livingston, I'd just said to myself "you're gonna score here". That's about it. Slightly ironic that Hardie, one of the best free kick specialists in recent years, was an ex Jag.
ian_mac
I actually thought that the delivery from corners on Saturday was very good. The problem was that that our players never seemed to be "in the mix" for these balls coming in and didn't really seem to have the desire to attack the ball. There were a few occasions when the ball broke loose in the Hearts box and none of our players were anywhere near it. You have to get in to these areas and "pick up the crumbs" as Lambie used to say. Hearts first goal was a great example of this.
oneteaminglasgow
Seems an odd thing to have a go at when our only chance of the entire match came from a corner, but whatever.
potty trained
The concern I have with our corners is the takers ability to continually over hit them, regardless of who takes it. Yet, they don't hit it softer, or we don't put someone on the far corner to meet an over hit corner.

Yet, they don't hit it softer, or we don't put someone on the far corner to meet an over hit corner. I remember a couple of seasons ago the complaints were (1) the ball never got past the first defender, and (2) they were useless "floaters." Big Conrad did well enough from corners for us over the seasons, I thought, and a few others weighted in too. Hopefully it'll start to come good again. That would allow for the deeper ball and also, as often happens, the defender or our attacker gets a slight touch that takes it over everyone else. Someone coming in at the back also stretches the defenders instead of crowding the 6 yard box Saying that with our set pieces id be tempted to leave 3 up if I was the opposing manager Edited August 24, 2015 by Norgethistle
