And so, Jags are thwarted for a share of the all-time table progression record, but kick on with only 1 defeat in 10, and consolidate their position as 5th top in the Premiership away table : - )

:detective: 30.12.2015 Aberdeen 0 Partick Thistle 0 (SPFL Premiership - game 19)

  • Callum Booth's current run of 30 consecutive competitive appearances is the longest stretch since Aaron Taylor Sinclair's near 15 month run of 56 competitive games set between October 2012 and January 2014.
  • Thistle's current run of 3 consecutive clean sheets in the League is currently only bettered across the 10 main British Leagues by Middlesbrough, who are sitting on a spectacular club-record equalling run of seven successive clean sheets in the league.
  • On a personal level, the commanding Tomáš Cerný is now on a run of 345 minutes without conceding a goal. On a team level, he's now celebrating 3 consecutive clean sheets since his return from injury. Back in April, Scott Fox was thwarted for a run of 4 consecutive top-flight clean sheets with a 2-0 reverse at... Celtic Park (Feck). Alan Rough was the last Jag to go one better, more than 33 years ago. His run of 4 included: Morton [a] D0-0, Aberdeen [h] D0-0, St Mirren [h] D0-0 and Rangers [h] W2-0. That run was broken with a 2-2 draw at... Celtic Park! (FFS!) George Niven holds the all-time club-record for League games, having returned 5-in-a-row back in 1968.
  • The nil nil draw is Thistle's most common result in the League this season, having been recorded thrice.
  • Thistle have now failed to score in 5 consecutive League games against Aberdeen. In this "same team" category, it's the second longest barren run in the club's League history; only a 6 game League run vs St Johnstone 1994-97 went beyond this point.
  • In the 6 game Premiership form table, Thistle, with 14 points, are second only to Aberdeen on goal difference [see link].
  • In the 10 game Premiership form table, Thistle, with 21 points, are second only to Celtic who have 2 points more [see link].
  • Jags are now on their diamond anniversary of 75 competitive games without a goal from a penalty.
  • Levelling all seasons to 3 points per win, Thistle's current tally of 1.26 points per game represents the greatest top-flight halfway points gather since season 1979-80.

One last stat for 2015... is this the greatest stat of Archie's reign so far?

TWO CONSECUTIVE CALENDAR MONTHS UNBEATEN IN COMPETITIVE ACTION DURING A TOP-FLIGHT CAMPAIGN

Last night's hard fought draw at Pittodrie closed out another unbeaten calendar month for Archie's Jags, repeating the feat of November.

As a feat, it's up there with the 19 League games unbeaten start to his managerial career I reckon.

Back to back unbeaten calendar months are an extreme rarity in the competitive games fixture list when Thistle are in the top-flight.

So much so, in fact, that this equals the competitive games club-record for the category. [see spoiler for full details]

As you can see, Alan Archibald is only the third manager to register this impressive feat, following in the footsteps of Donald Turner and Willie Thornton.

It is, indeed, the first time a top-flight Thistle side have went two consecutive calendar months unbeaten in competitive action since the famous '62-'63" side, who were gunning for the Scottish title.

No Partick Thistle side has ever registered three-months-in-a-row in this category.

Dare we dream of a sensational record-making start to 2016?

Whatever happens, weel done to the Erch, the Shagster and the highly capable record-equalling class of 2015-16!

A guid new year tae a' Jagskind... here's tae dreamin' and here's a health tae ye.

The record-sharing runs in full...

Note: Any inactive months are completely ignored for the purposes of this query.

Is our return of 14 league clean sheets in 2015 the highest number attained in a calendar year, where we have spent the entire year in the top flight of Scottish football?

Great question... it's the 4th highest return. George Easton's stuffy Jags of the late 10s to early 20s seem to dominate our clean sheet records. It's the best in nearly 100 years though, some achievement...

Love it when other folks post Stats. Much more please!

Since Christie Elliott's 85th minute consolation against Celtic nearly 2 years ago, Thistle have played 11 competitive games without a goal against Aberdeen or Celtic...

:detective: 02.01.2016 Celtic 1 Partick Thistle 0 (SPFL Premiership - game 20)

  • Thistle meet Celtic in Saturday League action for the first time since November 2003.
  • Thistle register 4 consecutive 1st half nil nils for the first time since January 2012.
  • The ever-committed Stuart Bannigan registers his 9th yellow card in 19 League games. Biggest League hauls since 1997-98 were only TEN; Andy Lyons (1997-98), Darren Brady (2006-07) and Kallum Higginbotham (2013-14).
  • Nir Bitton becomes the first Celt to be sent off vs Thistle since Tommy Burns in 1978.
  • Thistle have now failed to score in 5 consecutive League games against Celtic. In this "same team" category, it's (jointly) the second longest barren run in the club's League history; only a 6 game League run vs St Johnstone (1994-97) went beyond this point. Bizarrely, this exactly matches a similar occurrence vs Aberdeen just 3 days earlier.
  • Thistle have now failed to score in 6 consecutive competitive games against Celtic. In this "same team" category, it's (jointly) the third longest barren run in the club's history; only 8 game runs vs St Johnstone (1994-99) and Rangers (1923-25) have went beyond this point.
  • The all-time club record for consecutive losses to the same team in the League is once again reset, now standing at 18 vs. Celtic.

ongoing sequences...

  • 22 competitive games without defeat when we score the opening goal, 23rd Sep 2014 to date.
  • 31 consecutive competitive appearances for Callum Booth, 14th Mar 2015 to date. (Longest run since: Aaron Taylor-Sinclair - 56 games; 27th Oct 2012 to 18th Jan 2014. Club record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games; 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.)
  • 58 competitive games without a penalty award, 19th Sep 2014 to date.
  • 76 competitive games without a goal from a penalty, 22nd Feb 2014 to date.

Looking ahead...

Thistle, who have played Scottish Cup ties on every day of the week, have a chance to maintain their 100% Scottish Cup record on a Friday; played 1 won 1! [see link]

Red cards for either side of the old firm against us are almost unheard of. You mention above that Tommy Burns was the last celtic player prior to Saturday to get his marching orders against us ( a mere 37 years ago) but can you advise the last time a rangers player was red carded against us?

Thistle fan on Pie & Bovril reckoned it was Colin Jackson in an Anglo-Scottish game in 1980...Willie Johnston was sent off when we played them at Ibrox in around 1973...we got a penalty as well in that game but were denied an even more blatant one for a John Greig assault on Ronnie Glavin...clearly a bridge too far for any career-minded referee to give two penalties for the opposition at Ibrox.

When Tommy Burns was sent off at Firhill, the ref still managed to do the right thing by sending off two Thistle players, Colin McAdam and Bobby Houston.

Sadly, three of the players sent off have passed away...which in itself is a comment on how unusual it is for Old Firm players to be sent off against us.

Winter of 63 / a f Kincaid - Thanks for your replies. I don't know about you but I find these statistics utterly staggering. A 38 year gap between sending's off against celtic and 35 years and counting against rangers, and to think we get ridiculed when we say that we never get a decision going our way against the old firm. I would hazard a guess and say that no other team that we have played regularly over the last 40 years comes remotely close to the old firm figures. And to cap it all I think you will find the statistics for penalties against them is almost as good as those for the red cards

Ignoring penalty shoot-outs and taking all matches into account...

I cannot say with absolute certainty that these figures are correct because some match reports are either missing or incomplete but in 340 matches v Rangers since 1880, Thistle have been awarded at least 30 penalties. These are:-

5/12/1898 SFL 0-5 missed

16/8/1900 F 2-2 Campbell

8/11/1902 SFL 2-4 Massie

15/5/1905 GCC 5-0 Gray

1/5/1908 GCC 1-3 Gray

3/1/1911 SFL 2-2 McGregor

11/12/1928 DC 2-0 Torbet

6/5/1935 GCC 1-0 missed

3/1/1938 SFL 3-1 McKennan

15/10/1938 SFL 1-4 McKennan

29/8/1939 GC 1-4 Wallace

14/11/1942 SL 1-4 missed and Curran

i remember being at firhill early 60's playing against the h*ns

i'm sure it was the last 5 minutes we were drawing one each and were all making our way round to the exit (now ra bing) when we were awarded a penalty

joe hogan (legend) was playing centre joe had the ball and was about to place it on the spot when tommy ewing took the ball from hogan took the kick and put it a yard by the right hand post

now i can tell you the only thing that saved ewing from the jags support that day was the high wall at that end of the ground

was in hamilton a couple of years ago and went into ewings pub that was being run by his daughter

she told me that her dad wasn't in the best of health but i related the story about her dad and the "missed" penalty kick

i asked her to let her dad know that a jags supporter was in his pub and to pass on his best wishes but also tell him that i would never forgive him that "miss" that day

glad i got that off my chest :)

Is it that surprising ?

I would think that in games against the old firm over the last 30 years we have been defending for most of the game. Therefore we spend less time in their box, so less chance to get penalties and less chance to have red cards awarded. Conversely, the ref will have more chances to give penalties and red cards against us.

I suspect that there is some influence from the support that does skew the stats, but possibly not by as much as it might look.

I wasn't at this game but I'm pretty sure that Alan Hansen scored with the penalty...he was our penalty kick taker at the time...don't recall Jim Melrose ever taking a spot kick.

Notice there were 2 brave referees who awarded 2 pens in a match!

I don't doubt there is some merit in what you are saying Dick but one penatly in 34 years? How many times over the years have we shouted for a penalty or felt that a red had had to be shown and ended up with hee haw. If only the refs were as reticent when it came to awarding red cards or penalties against us

Ignoring penalty shoot-outs and taking all matches into account...

I cannot say with absolute certainty that these figures are correct because some match reports are either missing or incomplete but in 340 matches v Rangers since 1880, Thistle have been awarded at least 30 penalties. These are:-

5/12/1898 SFL 0-5 missed

16/8/1900 F 2-2 Campbell

8/11/1902 SFL 2-4 Massie

15/5/1905 GCC 5-0 Gray

1/5/1908 GCC 1-3 Gray

3/1/1911 SFL 2-2 McGregor

11/12/1928 DC 2-0 Torbet

2/1/1929 SFL 0-1 missed

2/1/1932 SFL 0-4 missed

6/5/1935 GCC 1-0 missed

3/1/1938 SFL 3-1 McKennan

15/10/1938 SFL 1-4 McKennan

29/8/1939 GC 1-4 Wallace

14/11/1942 SL 1-4 missed and Curran

30/9/1946 SFL 3-2 Sharp

11/1/1947 SFL 0-4 missed

7/5/1947 GCC 0-4 missed

I wasn't at this game but I'm pretty sure that Alan Hansen scored with the penalty...he was our penalty kick taker at the time...don't recall Jim Melrose ever taking a spot kick.

Definitely Hansen, he scored the equaliser and winner that night having been 3-2 down with not long left

Penalty paranoia?

30 penalties awarded against Rangers in 340 matches = a penalty awarded every 11 matches. (11/37% missed.)

With the same health warnings, I looked at 3 old rivals to compare with the Rangers figures:-

KILMARNOCK

19 penalties in 242 matches = 1 every 13 matches. (3/16% missed.)

MOTHERWELL

21 penalties in 247 matches = 1 every 12 matches. (8/38% missed.)

DUNDEE

23 penalties in 231 matches = 1 every 10 matches. (8/35% missed.)

A bit rough and ready but on the basis of these figures penalties against Rangers are no less frequent.
