Sean Welsh

Not for the first time this season, I thought that Sean Welsh was just the type of player we needed in midfield last night - composed on the ball, can make an incisive pass, able to win the ball back and carries a goal threat. We played better football when he was in the side and too many teams have flooded through our midfield this season - Bauben seems a bit lackadaisical and Craigen & Fraser lack experience.

He was particularly outstanding in the first half of the first game against Hearts. He got injured and didn't make the second half -it's seems to be the story of his career.

He is the club captain but his name never seems to be mentioned on the Official Site. Back in around January, there were reports that he was going to see a specialist and was hoping to be back playing in 2 or 3 weeks. Since then nothing - unless I've missed something, there have been no updates and no indication of when he might be back playing. We know he has some medical condition that makes him susceptible to and slow to recover from injury but what's the story? Why haven't we heard anything? Is his career in jeopardy?

There was an update (but I can't find it now) saying that his recovery was taking longer than originally expected and he was likely to be out for the rest of the season.

I seem to recall last season someone observed that teams with Sean Welsh in the starting XI had avoided defeat for a well above average period of time.

We didn't lose all season with Sean Welsh starting. Decent statistic, but probably mostly coincidental.

Can we afford to pay a wage for a player we get 10-15 games a season from- pragmatism says we cant but sometimes a manager needs to take a punt and see of he can stay fit for a season.

Osbourne is another one who if fit is influential but cant be guaranteed to be fit for 75% plus of games

  • 2 months later...

Bumped into Sean at B&Qs in Edinburgh, he reckons about six weeks. it was a groin problem that kept tearing and has frustrated the hell out of him. he says that Arron M is ready to go but SOD just need match fitness. he said that the left back mustoe had done well in training and a midfielder had looked not bad as well

A groin tear?

No wonder he was f**cked for most of last season then.

Probably kept trying to come back too quickly.

Hopefully when he comes back he will get a long interrupted run as he is a good player. Also reminds us of the importance of having a good physio at the club who can maybe get a player back a week or two earlier. Sorry to be a bore but as the club have not updated the website or made any announcement - does anyone know who our new physio is?

Sean didn't say what his name was but that he was good and was trying new/different stuff to move him forward.

as far as i could see it isn't a condition, just that when they thought it was fixed he ended up tearing it and they may have pushed things to much and delayed it more.

This has been brought up before about previous injuries. Maybe it didn't affect this particular injury (though he may just not have wanted to talk about it) but in the past it has been mentioned he has some kind of blood condition which means he recovers more slowly from injury. The condition doesn't make him more injury prone or affect him when he's uninjured, just slows down his recovery a bit. How accurate that is and whether it applies to all kinds of injuries I don't know but it was certainly mentioned in the past.

in any other walk of life he would have been paid off through capability. Welsh was a good player for us but I believe his career in top league football is over. if he does come back I would wager it very doubtful he will last three month before breaking down again. All sentiment aside Thistle cant afford to rely on him, his sick record would choke a horse, perhaps a coaching position job but for footballing it is not promising.

Well in most other industries there's probably scores of folk knocking on the door begging employment. And in most other industries the reason for absence from work isn't thru an industrial injury.

Loads of clubs have guys out long term with serious leg breaks, cruciates etc. They don't get turned loose even if they're on their last season's contract. Compared to other common serious footballing injuries Sean may even be relatively lucky.

I don't know then what you mean by "sentiment".
