Don't want to give you more work, but I'd be interested in seeing Kenny Arthur's penalty-saving record. I was never a huge KA fan, but always felt there was a decent chance of him saving penalties awarded against us.

Roughie too.

It's nae torra a ba' - just takes a few minutes if I've got the data, which is the labour intensive bit.

Data is too immature to go back further than the mid 90s, hoping to improve it in time.

Probably got enough for Kenny's era, although I wouldn't be bold enough to state as a categoric fact, what I have tells me he faced 24 ("All-games"), stopped 6 and 1 missed target.

I'm maybe only 90% confident with that statement - sometimes we were lucky to get a press paragraph in that era. If anyone knows of any other saves please let me know.

Good stuff, TJR.

This is foggy, but I can picture Kenny Arthur saving a penalty in a match at Ayr, that we eventually went on to win.

Maybe it was a dream.... or maybe I'm confusing it with the 2006 game at Stirling Albion.

Cheers Jagger, there are 2 candidates but, alas, no mention of penos from the (admittedly short) BBC reports:

27.10.2001 Ayr United [a] W2-0 (SFL First Division - game 12)

14.01.2006 Ayr United [a] W2-1 (SFL Second Division - game 21)

:detective: 02.02.2016 Partick Thistle 1 Motherwell 0 (SPFL Premiership - game 23)

  • Both sides lined up in their change strips; the last such occurrence in a Thistle game was in September 2013, a League Cup tie at Tannadice.
  • Stuart Bannigan picks up his 10th Yellow Card of this season's League campaign. In terms of the League, this (already!) matches the highest known player total for as far as my complete records can go; back to 1997-98.
  • Steven Lawless registers his 25th competition goal as a Jag and joins the illustrious company of Paul Cairney, Bobby Houston, Ian McDonald and Joe Hogan. Well done Stevie!
  • Thistle register their second last-minute winner of the season, following Ryan Stevenson's effort vs Inverness back in November. You need to rewind back to Oct/Nov 1976 to find the last time there was such a double occurrence in the top-flight when Brian Whittaker (2-1, 89 mins) scunnered Rangers and John Hansen (2-1, 89 mins) broke Hearts, both at Firhill. (We'll allow them their 89th minute winners as the benefit of the doubt, eh?)
  • 2,487 is Thistle's lowest home League crowd since 2,138 witnessed Kris Doolan's 4-goal Wednesday-night haul versus Hamilton back in January 2015.
  • Tomáš Cerný, now with 8, is on course for 13 clean-sheets in the League, which would give him the joint-second-best top-flight return of all-time for any Thistle goalie.

ongoing sequences:

  • 8 competitive games without a half-time lead, 12th Dec 2015 to date. (Longest run since: 19 games; 7th Mar 2015 to 26th Sep 2015.)
  • 24 competitive games without defeat when we score the opening goal, 23rd Sep 2014 to date. (Longest run since: 26 games; 29th Sep 2001 to 7th Dec 2002.)
  • 35 consecutive competitive appearances for Callum Booth, 14th Mar 2015 to date. (Longest run since: Aaron Taylor-Sinclair - 56 games; 27th Oct 2012 to 18th Jan 2014. Club record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games; 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.)
  • 62 competitive games without a penalty award, 19th Sep 2014 to date. (Longest run since the club-record: 106 games; 10th Oct 1891 to 14th Dec 1895. *)
  • 80 competitive games without a goal from a penalty, 22nd Feb 2014 to date. (Longest run since the club-record: 114 games; 8th Aug 1891 to 14th Dec 1895. *)

* For these queries, the sequence begins with the introduction of the penalty-kick law in season 1891-92. The perceived club-record, although possible, should be treated with some degree of caution due to the scant nature of some match reports from the era.

Surely Charnley must trump that or even John Psycho Workman

Back to penalties, Jonny Tuffey and Paul Gallacher saved a good few. How do their stats compare with Kenny Arthur?

I missed a Scott Fox from earlier - I tricked myself as he faced another one at Blyth after coming on as a substitute. Table below updates and expands. This data might well be 100% accurate but I wouldn't be too surprised to later discover a stray save or a miss has been overlooked.

Note: Re-updated 30 March 2016 with another Kenny Arthur save.

I would quite like that to be true for either of these. Like a badge of honour.

I can tell you, thanks to great research by af kincaid, that Bobby Law is our all-time leading red card man, with a total of 7.

I wonder what sort of homework referees do before a game. If they look at a league table of yellow and red cards we will be marked as a dirty team and that could colour his decisions. Or am I being paranoid?

Not entirely: just because you're paranoid, it doesn't mean they're not out to get you. :D Some time ago I was surprised to hear that before each season officials get together and decide who are the bad boys. In other words, some players' cards are marked before they kick a ball that season, while others are adjudged to be as clean as the driven snow, even when they're the second goalkeepers. (Did someone mention Jim Goodwin?)

That kind of prejudice to fair decision-making would rightly be condemned if it were to occur among judges or sheriffs, but like so much else in football this questionable practice is accepted as part of the game here. It may explain why the standard of refereeing seems to be dragged down to the lowest common level here too.

  • Aidan Nesbitt becomes the 29th player to be listed in competitive Thistle team sheets for the season.
  • Thistle have retired with a nil-nil half-time scoresheet in 8 of the last 9 competitive matches.
  • More than 8 years have passed since Thistle last won two consecutive Scottish Cup games.
  • In 14 decades of Scottish Cup action, the 2010s currently stand alongside the 1990s as the only decade without a Scottish Cup Quarter Final appearance by Thistle.
  • Despite being responsible for our club-record no. of Scottish Cup progressions (6), it's been 56 years since Thistle last ousted the Arabs from the competition.
  • Thistle are currently on a 39-year-old sequence of 11 consecutive defeats vs. Dundee United in Cup matches. The horror-run is second only to 13 consecutive Cup defeats to Rangers set between 1936 and 1949.

ongoing sequences:

  • Antonio German becomes the 30th player to be listed in competitive Thistle team sheets for the season.
  • Aidan Nesbitt becomes the 26th player to make a competitive appearance for the season.
  • Thistle have retired with a nil-nil half-time scoresheet in 9 of the last 10 competitive matches.
  • With 3 consecutive competitive wins vs Perth Saints, Archie's Jags now share the H2H club-record, matching runs set in 1929, 1964, 1967 and 1982.
  • This was the 100th League encounter between the two clubs; St Johnstone maintain the upper hand with 38 victories to 32.
  • The 4th artistic giveaway of 2015-16 results in a Thistle victory with a clean-sheet, as have all 3 of the previous occasions!
  • If Tomáš Černý maintains his current clean-sheet League ratio (9 out of 20), he will set an all-time 'keepers club-record of 15 clean-sheets in a top-flight League campaign. A few games back, we noted it was a big ask. It's now very much game on. 6 out of 14 required. Go on Tomáš.
  • Alan Archibald becomes the 8th man to manage Thistle in 100 top-flight games.
  • Archie's Jags have conceded just 137 top-flight goals in his first 100 games; it's the same-stage lowest total of any Thistle manager in history.

Some very satisfying stats there, hopefully with even better to come.
