Our top scoring performance of the season to date vs County. We also scored three in one half. We might have managed that against Stenhousemuir in the league cup back in the summer but when's the last time we managed this feat in the league?

Keep up the good work TJR :)

How did Doug Somner manage to score 19 in friendlies? From the dates you give, he had 4 pre-seasons with Thistle. Even if you assume a high number of 5 frendlies per season, he would have to net an average of just about one a game which is very hard to keep up over such a large number of fixtures. Furthermore, generally a player would not play every minute of every friendly and you would expect other strikers to be given more of a chance as Somner would have proved his fitness, sharpness and scoring touch without question. Did we score barrowloads of goals against weak opposition or was Somner just in incredible form in friendlies?

Must be close to a low for clean sheets at this point of the season (wee bit of reverse psychology here for next 2 games lol)?

Good idea Sickboy.

Sorry, I'm slightly confused.... on the Doolan 100 thread he's got 94 competitive goals (85 in the league). Are the 6 others friendlies?

I was confused that you were confused as I thought I had made it clear in the table. Then I figured it was probably unreadable on mobiles or tablets due to being a full length j-peg, so here it is in normal text (you're right enough with the 6 friendlies)

Your off-the-cuff assessments always amaze me ptd; Dougie's friendly form was, indeed, remarkable. Approx. 1.5 goals per game. The only 3 he never scored in were:

24.04.1976 Kilmarnock [h] D2-2 (Friendly)

29.07.1978 Ross County [a] W2-1 (Friendly)

02.08.1978 Lossiemouth [a] W3-0 (Friendly)

He did most of his friendly damage in the Highlands:

28.07.1975 Nairn County [a] W4-0 (Friendly) 4 goals

30.07.1975 Ross County [a] W4-0 (Friendly) 1 goal

31.07.1978 Brora Rangers [a] W5-0 (Friendly) 2 goals

04.08.1978 Buckie Thistle [a] W3-1 (Friendly) 1 goal

10.02.1979 Girvan Amateurs [a] W6-0 (Friendly) 2 goals

As always, I remain open to the possibility that improved information can enforce change and I should point out that Dougie's second at Telford Street (3 August '77) is currently flagged for attention, with conflicting reports saying it could be either John Craig or Dougie Somner that scored it. Currently looking for further press reports for that one. It's no' easy!

The shut-out list is a reminder of how brutal the period 1968-1970 was for Jags fans, and of course it saw us eventually get relegated.

But how great were the couple of seasons that came next!

Noticed that for sure but the one I thought shocking was the just under 20% for season 2005/2006. How we got out that league first time of asking is one of life's great mysteries.

Amazing, thank you. Dougie Somner-Hammer of the Highlands!

He was obviously a fan of sumner football.

Not a bad month at all; only Celtic managed to beat Thistle over the course of the seven League games and Thistle rose 5 places in the League. To cap it all off, there were back-to-back clean-sheets, mainly thanks to SITB. ;)

:detective:December round up

03.12.2016 Hamilton Academical [a] D1-1 (SPFL Premiership - game 15)

NEW H2H RECORD

  • Sean Welsh scores Thistle's 100th away League goal versus Accies.
  • Thistle go 10 competitive games unbeaten versus Accies, a new H2H record.

09.12.2016 Celtic [h] L1-4 (SPFL Premiership - game 16)

NIGHTMARE-RUN CONTINUES

  • Liam Lindsay scores Thistle's 100th home League goal against Celtic.
  • Thistle's horror-run against versus Celtic continues, with negative records galore being clocked-up. We are now 25 competitive games without a draw against them (02.05.1995 to date, our longest such run against team in history); we've now suffered 20 consecutive League defeats at their hands (07.10.1995 to date, our longest such run against any team in history), and we're now sitting on 12 consecutive home League defeats by them (11.11.1995 to date, again, our longest such run against any team in history).

17.12.2016 Heart of Midlothian [a] D1-1 (SPFL Premiership - game 17)

SEAN'S LUCKY REF

  • Sean Welsh has scored in all four of the competitive Thistle matches handled by Don Robertson in 2016-17.
  • Thistle net their 100th League goal at Tynecastle.
  • Abdul Osman picks up his 25th Yellow Card in competitive action as a Jag; his ratio is 1 every 3.68 games.

20.12.2016 Celtic [a] L0-1 (SPFL Premiership - game 18)

A MISERABLE RECORD CONTINUES

  • Thistle have now lost 21-in-a-row to Celtic in the League, 8 beyond the previous category record of 13-in-a-row vs. Rangers (1897-1906).
  • Thistle have played 6-in-a-row away to Celtic without scoring, 2 beyond the previous H2H record of 4-in-a-row (1919-1921). Adding to the frustration is the fact that 4 of these games have ended just 1-0.

23.12.2016 Ross County [a] W3-1 (SPFL Premiership - game 19)

KRIS DOOLAN, PARTICK THISTLE GOALS CENTURION

  • With his sixth goal of the season, Liam Lindsay remains joint-top of our competitive scoring charts. The intriguing possibility remains that he could be the first Thistle defender in history to finish outright top at the summit. Jered Stirling got closest to that feat, finishing as joint-top competitive scorer with 6 goals in 1997-98. Jered's 6 in that season was enough to see him achieve the unique feat of finishing top League scorer as a defender.
  • Sean Welsh extends his lead at the top of our assists chart with his 4th in 8 games.
  • The ever-neat Kris Doolan makes his 200th start to go with with his 100 appearances as a sub, as he reaches his excellent 300 competitive games milestone.
  • Kris becomes the twelfth man to become a Partick Thistle goals centurion in the "all-games" category, a truly fantastic achievement in the modern era.
  • In the 62nd minute, Kris became Thistle's all-time leading competitive scorer vs. County with 5 goals. His spell at the outright top lasted just a quarter of an hour as Chris Erskine joined him at the summit!
  • There has been no repeat outcome in the last seven Thistle v County tussles, an unprecedented occurrence in the H2H.
  • It's now 54 away League games without a penalty award, 1st Mar 2014 to date, and Thistle are closing in on the perceived club-record: 62 games; 1st Apr 1911 to 7th Nov 1914.

28.12.2016 Dundee [h] W2-0 (SPFL Premiership - game 20)

TOP 6 IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE SEASON

  • Callum Booth is the first Thistle player to score directly from a free-kick since Kallum Higginbotham did so in a 2-1 League win at Rugby Park in April 2014.
  • Callum's goal takes our competitive scorers spread up to 12 players in 2016-17.
  • It's been a long time since we've seen 5 Thistle first-card yellows at Firhill; you have to rewind all the way back to a 4-3 third tier win over Alloa in December 2005 to find the last instance of 5 straight Firhill yellows for Jagsmen.
  • With this victory, Thistle bring to an end the record H2H run of 7 competitive home games without a win (2011-2106) and the joint H2H record-run of 3 consecutive home League defeats (2015-2016).
  • Thistle sit in the Top 6 of Scottish football in the second half of the season for the first time since 1981.

31.12.2016 Kilmarnock [h] D0-0 (SPFL Premiership - game 21)

H2H RECORDS EXTENDED

  • 18-year-old Andy McCarthy becomes the 27th player to be listed in a competitive Thistle team-sheet in 2016-17, a personal first for the young man.
  • 7 of the last 8 Firhill clashes between these two sides have finished as a draw.
  • Thistle are now 9 competitive home games without a win vs. Killie (22.11.2003 to date), extending the H2H record in both the League and the Competitive Games categories.
  • Conversely, Thistle are 6 Competitive & League games without defeat vs. Kille. In the League, this is the longest run since the H2H record of 16 League games without defeat, 1971-1980.

Not so many games this month, but plenty of interesting stats nonetheless...

:detective: January round up

13.01.2017 Lokeren [n] L2-5 (Friendly)

A NEW COSMOPOLITAN RECORD FOR THISTLE?

  • Thistle play Belgian opposition for the first time.
  • There are 8 non-Scots in Thistle's starting line-up, a record figure which probably equals the number at Bath, where the identity of the trialist goalkeeper remains unknown to me.
  • Mark Ridgers becomes the 8th goalkeeper to appear for Thistle in 2016-17. It's the greatest number since the record-making season of 1987-88 in which no fewer than 10 players kept goal for Thistle!
  • Ridgers, who came on as a substitute at half-time, conceded just a minute into his debut. Based on all the known reports, Mark, amazingly, is actually the 4th debutant to have conceded so quickly. The record probably lies with Archie McDonald. Newly signed from Ayr, he made his debut on Tues-15-Aug-1899 against post-liquidation Clyde, who had 10 guests in their eleven. Straight from kick-off, without a Thistle player having touched the ball, McDonald had conceded! Our two other first-minute unfortunates were Colin Brodie, who conceded to Owen Coyle after just 35 seconds of an October '86 League clash at Boghead, and new £100,000 signing Andy Murdoch who conceded a headed goal from a corner in a League match at Kilbowie in January '89.
  • Lokeren are only the second continental side to net five times against Thistle, following on from Rot Weiss Essen who inflicted a 7-1 defeat upon us in May, 1973.

21.01.2017 Formartine United [h] W4-0 (Scottish Cup 4th Round)

ADE LAST MAN STANDING

  • Ryan Edwards, announced as player-of-the-month earlier in the day (for the third time this season), is rested, thereby missing his first competitive match in almost ten months.
  • Thistle shoot towards the city end in the first half for the first time in 15 months!
  • Chris Erskine nets his 49th and 50th goals for Thistle (in all games) as he continues to make his impressive ascent up the all-time Top 50 scorers chart.
  • Ade Azeez is now the last-man-standing with a 100% competitive appearance record this term. At 27-not-out, he's never missed a competitive game since his arrival at the club.
  • Mustapha Dumbuya (back in competitive action after more than 8 months of absence) and Andy McCarthy (making his competitive debut) become the 24th and 25th players to see competitive action this term.
  • Abdul Osman and Steven Lawless become the third and fourth Jags to do the assist/goal double whammy this term, following on from Chris Erskine (away to Stenhousemuir in the League Cup) and Ade Azeez (away to Dundee in the League).

28.01.2017 Inverness Caledonian Thistle [a] D-0 (SPFL Premiership - game 22)

CLEAN-SHEET RUNS EXTENDED

  • Making his competitive debut is Niall Keown, who becomes the 26th player to feature in the League and Cup games this season.
  • Thistle register their 4th consecutive clean-sheet at the Caledonian Stadium. Needless to say this is a H2H record. In fact, only once has such a run been bettered against any club; we registered SEVEN consecutive competitive clean-sheets at Rugby Park between 1979 and 1983, a streak which included SIX one-nil wins!
  • You can take your pick of H2H records which have been set in this game, including 4 competitive away games without defeat as well as 3 competitive away games without a win.
  • Thistle register their fourth consecutive competitive clean-sheet. There have only been two greater runs in our history; Archie's Jags registered 5-in-a-row in March 2013 and George Easton's Jags went 7-in-a-row in February 1921.

Tommy Rae was the first "super-sub" to do the double. In our "first season back" we were being held 1-1 at Bayview in a December '71, and Tommy struck twice in the last 6 minutes to win both points for Thistle.

In a pre-season match at Telford Street on Wednesday 3rd August 1977, Jim Melrose made history by becoming the first (and, to date, the only) Thistle sub to bag a hat-trick. Remarkably, our flame-haired "super-sub" scored 3 in the last 6 minutes, as Caledonian were finally overcome in a 6-1 victory. Just to prove he was no light-touch, Jim also did the sub-double on the Hampden stage, but alas to no avail as Thistle went down 2-4 to Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup semi-final of 1978.

Chris Erskine is the only other Jag known to have done the deed twice, and the only man to have done so all in competitive action. On both occasions, Squiddy's off-the-bench doubles resulted in Cup victories - a 5-1 League Cup win at home to Berwick in 2009 and a 5-4 Hampden thriller against Queen's Park in an August 2012 Challenge Cup tie, including a super-crazy stoppage-time winner from the thinking man's Pele.

As Jags on Tour rightly points out, Steven Craig was the last "super-sub" to do the double in competitive action back in September 2012, although he had nearly an hour on the pitch to do so, having replace an injured Kris Doolan in the 34th minute of the match in question. By co-incidence, 'twas the Accies who were again beaten to nil in the League at Firhill, this time by 4. It was some debut for the son of Joe!

Amazingly, until yesterday, Declan McDaid held the distinction of being the last "super-sub" in the all-games category. With Thistle heading for an embarrassing 0-1 defeat at the hands of Spanish minnows, F.C. Pinatar, in July 2014, three goals in the last 15 minutes - one from Gary Fraser and two from Declan - spared the blushes. It's amazing as these were the only two goals Declan managed in all of his time at Firhill!

In all, I reckon Kris to be the 20th member of the "super-sub" club, which I'm randomly defining by the parameter of scoring twice as a sub. I should point out, however, that starting line-ups haven't been fully established for some of the more obscure pre-season friendlies, so there may well be another lurking in the shadows. In order of joining, the known members list now reads: Tommy Rae; Denis McQuade; Jim Melrose; Dougie Somner; Gordon McGregor; George Clark; Pat Kelly; Eddie Gallagher; Isaac English; Albert Craig; Tom Smith; Gerry Britton; Martin Hardie; Stephen McConalogue; Simon Lynch; Stephen McKeown; Chris Erskine; Steven Craig; Declan McDaid; Kris Doolan.

Wins to nil sandwiched Thistle's 141st "birthday" on the 19th February, ably commemorating our first-known match which was also won to nil. :happy2:

:detective: February round up

01.02.2017 St Johnstone [h] L0-1 (SPFL Premiership - game 23)

JAGS + SAINTS = FIRHILL FOR NILS

  • Thistle's first competitive defeat of 2017 halts a 5 game unbeaten run.
  • The last 9 Firhill clashes between these two have ended with a nil in the scoreline.

04.02.2017 Aberdeen [a] L0-2 (SPFL Premiership - game 24)

FIRING BLANKS

  • Jason Banton becomes the 31st player to be listed in a competitive Thistle team-sheet in 2016-17.
  • For the first-time ever, 8 non-Scots are in the starting line-up for a competitive Partick Thistle match.
  • Further history was made with the introduction of Ade Azeez in the 58th minute, meaning this was the first match ever to feature 9 non-Scots on the field for Thistle at the same time.
  • For the third time, Archie's Jags have failed to score in 4 consecutive League games. There's never been a longer run in the top-flight. The category record of 5-in-a-row was set in December 2004 by Gerry Britton / Derek Whyte's team in the First Division and was equalled in April 2010 by Ian McCall's side, also in the First Division.
  • Thistle are 9 competitive games without a win versus Aberdeen (30.08.2014 to date), the longest run since the H2H record of 18, set between 1979-1993.

11.02.2017 St Johnstone [a] W1-0 (Scottish Cup 5th Round)

THIRTEEN DECADES OF SCOTTISH CUP QUARTER FINALS FOR THISTLE

  • Abdul Osman makes his 100th competitive appearance as a Jag.
  • For the fifth successive meeting between these two sides, the game is won by the away team.
  • Thistle's victory extends the impressive H2H club-record against the Saints, now reset at 4 consecutive competitive game away wins, 17th October 2015 to date. High standards are being set.
  • Success in a Scottish Cup tie in Perth at last - third time lucky.
  • Thistle register back-to-back clean-sheets in the Scottish Cup for the first time in 10 years. It's doubtful, however, that the club-record will ever be broken. Amazingly, Thistle returned EIGHT consecutive clean-sheets across the spectrum of two Scottish Cup campaigns in 1921 and 1922!
  • Thistle qualify for the Scottish Cup Quarter Finals for the first time in the 2010s and have now reached that stage in THIRTEEN different decades. Only Hibernian (14), Celtic (14) and Rangers (15) have bettered this remarkable feat of consistency.

18.02.2017 Hamilton Academical [h] W2-0 (SPFL Premiership - game 25)

DOOLAN LEAPS INTO THE TOP 10

  • Tomáš Černý has never been on the losing side in fixtures between the two; four unbeaten as an Academical and now five unbeaten as a Jag.
  • The Top Cat has now registered a clean-sheet in 19 out of 49 competitive games, an excellent ratio of 38.78%. Of the 'keepers that have played 10 games or more, TC is currently third only to Robert Hamilton (6 in 13 games, 46.2%) and James Ferguson (23 in 51 games, 45.1%), both of whom existed in our halcyon clean-sheet days of the 1910s.
  • Doolan's goal in the 67th minute broke a horrible run of 472 minutes without a League goal for Thistle and prevented the category record of 5 League games without a goal being equalled.
  • Doolan has netted 7 in his last 9 games against Accies, his club total now standing at 8 in total, a tally only bettered by his 9 against Queen of the South.
  • With his headed brace, the number nine overtakes Sandy Hair, and now sits as Thistle's 5th highest scorer vs the Lanarkshire side.
  • In competitive action, Kris is the first substitute to score twice in a match since Steven Craig did so on his debut, co-incidentally also against Hamilton, in a 4-0 Firhill League win back in September 2012.
  • Now with 41 goals in the SPFL Premiership, Kris is third only to Leigh Griffiths (59) and Adam Rooney (54).
  • With his second goal of the game, Kris moved on to 97 competitive goals for Partick Thistle, a tally which places him in the all-time Top 10 in that category.
  • Thistle are now 11 competitive games without defeat versus Accies, a H2H record run which stretches from 1st November 2014 to date. Running concurrently with this is a run of 10 League games without defeat against them, a joint H2H record.

25.02.2017 Heart of Midlothian [h] W2-0 (SPFL Premiership - game 26)

3 WINS TO NIL ROCKIN' THE STATS

  • Adam Barton (for Doolan) gets his first assist for Thistle.
  • Kris Doolan scores his 89th League goal for the club. Only Willie Sharp (90) has scored more.
  • Abdul Osman (for Lindsay) gets his 4th assist of the season in competitive action, and lies second in the table behind Sean Welsh (5).
  • Liam Lindsay's 7th goal of the season keeps up an exciting three-way battle for top competitive scorer this term, as he lies just behind Chris Erskine (8) and Kris Doolan (9).
  • All three of Thistle's oncoming subs were booked. Whilst there have been several doubles over the years - Doolan and Elliott in the Challenge Cup final being the most recent example - the triple whammy is almost certainly a first, with only some patchy data in the mid 1990s preventing a statement of fact. © Jagfox
  • Tomáš Černý's superb clean-sheet record continues to build, now sitting at a ratio of 40% (20 in 50 games). Of all the 'keepers who could reasonably be considered as regulars, it's the second greatest ratio of all-time, and the best for 100 years.
  • All four of Thistle's home League wins in 2016-17 have been by the same 2-0 scoreline. © BowenBoys
  • Thistle win to nil for the third consecutive competitive game. It's been 36 years since we last did that as a top-flight club, way back in 1981. Archie's Jags are gunning for the all-time club-record of 5-in-a-row which was set in March 2013 - on match day six of Archie's reign!!!
