Focus - Sylvia

Recommended Posts

Just back from Focus at Oran Mor, which was a great night out. Never seen a left handed six stringed bass before for sure!!

Sylvia was played with a disguised funky intro, and the performance was gorgeous.

it got me thinking, was there a particular moment when Sylvia was adopted as a Jags Saturday Special?

Cannot answer your question, but love that tune (for want of a better word!). One of the joys of the Draw Lose or Draw podcast is that there is always a full play of Sylvia (including the fake ending and fresh beginning) at the close of each edition.

Sounds like a great night out (as you say!). Does the drummer still sing?

Think you may be confusing the drummer (Pierre van der Linden) with Thijs van Leer, the keyboard, flautist and yodellist. The latter does the vocals.

Pierre van der Linden was absolutely something else tonight. His dexterity at 76 (3 drum solos) is exceptional.

Are Focus aware of their legendary status (or at least the legendary status of Sylvia) at Firhill? Given that they were playing a gig within a mile or so of the stadium, you would assume that somebody would have brought this to their attention. Do they look out for Thistle results on a Saturday? Has any other football club adopted Sylvia?

Good to know. The best of drummers don't loose it. Their skill sets them apart regardless of age.

On the subject of septuagenarian drummers, I'm going to see the great Steve Gadd* (for the 3rd time) next week. Nowadays he just tours for fun. Last saw him a couple of years back playing at the MacKintosh Church at Queens Cross. Apologies to our lad in the John Lambie, but I'd be very surprised if a better/more famous drummer has ever played in Maryhill. Anyone?

*worth googling SG just to see who he has played with and the records he's drummed on.

They are aware. Chat on the Glasgow West End FB page reveals somebody told Thijs van Leer (Hammond, flute, yodelling) about it after a gig recently.

Club should get them along as speial guests some time, do the intro music live, do the half-time draw, etc...

I’m not 100% sure, but I think it replaced Whistling Jack Smith maybe sometime after it was a hit, so 72 or 73. It was in turn replaced by The Crunch by the RAH Band around 78

Much preferred The Crunch being played for the teams coming out when I was a wee guy.

Not to mention the Banana Splits!

Somebody should organise a "vintage" day at one match, with all those old songs getting played, macaroon bars and spearmint chewing gum on offer, and matchday programme showing the other matches so we can get the half-time scores (a half-time score board to be erected on the bing  for that purpose). Hell, why not also borrow a blue invalid motor or two!

Thanks for this LIB.

Hadn't realised that a gem of a drummer like Steve Gadd was playing such a humble venue as he is next Saturday. Sadly I'll be in Warsaw for something considerably less interesting.

Not quite Maryhill, but Keith Moon in Auchinleck has to be a contender.

Just back in the door from Warzawza.

How was Steve Gadd LiB?

Excellent. He's being playing for fun on and off in this trio (hammond organ, tenor sax & drums). It was their 10th anniversary. He's not the least bit flash, no overpowering cymbal crashing drum solos. No ego, just incredible musicianship. You see why star acts seek him out for session work.
