:detective: Partick Thistle 0 St Mirren 1 (SPFL Premiership - game 23)

  • Left back debutant Callum Booth becomes the 34th player to appear for Partick Thistle this season, and the 25th to do so competitively.
  • In the League, Thistle have only beaten St Mirren once in the last 34 years at Firhill, a sorry 15 game run which began away back in January 1981.
  • Thistle register as the first club which has failed to breach St Mirren's defence this season, and the Paisley side duly end their run of 30 competitive matches without a clean sheet.
  • Thistle's last 7 League defeats have all been to nil. 5 of the last 6 have been lost by 1 goal to 0.
  • For the eleventh footballing month in a row, Thistle have registered exactly one lonely League victory in each calendar month. This incredibly strange run now stretches from January 2014 to January 2015.
  • Thistle stay 9th in the Premiership for the 11th match in a row.
  • The attendance of 3,864 represents Thistle's second largest home gate of the season - but is still 35% down on the equivalent fixture from last season which drew 5,971.
  • Thistle's 12 League games have attracted 40,291 through the gates, down 31% from the 58,484 who watched the like for like fixtures in 2013-14 (replacing Hearts with Dundee and Hibs with Hamilton). Even removing the 3 "mismatched" League games versus Hamilton and Dundee, the like for like drop remains enormous at 27%, a figure which seems completely out of step with the rest of the clubs in the Premiership.

^ Thanks afk, that's highly illustrative. "Bertie roolz ok". And at least Archie has never been a "never"! As a matter of interest (probably only to me) was your root source the Statto tables for game finish positions? I wouldn't mind seeing how those figures change if you stuck with "Top 6" all the way as opposed to "Top half". I remember looking at this Top 6 business in Zatafact when I noted: "Thistle, on average, finish the season as Scotland's 11th most succesful League club. This represents a sharp decline in fortunes since the Jags were relegated from the Premier League in 1981-82. At that time, Thistle finished, on average, as Scotland's 9th most succesful League club. The Top 6 feat seems to be very much the preserve of the old school Thistle." http://www.wearethistle.co.uk/forums/index.php?/topic/8327-zatafact-140-seasons-of-the-indomitable-p-t-f-c/page__view__findpost__p__149649

Tomorrow brings our silver anniversary fixture with Inverness CT – and I think for the first time it genuinely feels like there is a bit of history between the clubs – from mad mental comebacks to penalty shoot outs to wonder strikes in the rain.

Mind you, they’re not the first Caledonian Thistle we’ve ever played. Way back in the days of the cultured ‘tache brigade (May 1887) we played Caledonian Thistle of Glasgow. Never mind the Fake Thistle patter, this Inverness mob are also the fake Caledonian Thistle. #banter

Despite their awesome ascent through the ranks, the Highlanders trail the Thistle by 10 victories to 11 overall.

Thistle are seeking to reach their 32nd Scottish Cup Quarter Cup Final. Since we first entered in the 1880s we only failed to make the Quarters in one decade – the troublesome 1990s. We made up for that by getting to the Quarter Finals six times in the 00s. So far in the 10s we’ve yet to get there…

If you’re a stats fan with 10 minutes to spare, I ran a special feature on our Scottish Cup escapades on my Zatafact thread which you can check out here.

:detective: Partick Thistle 1 Inverness Caledonian Thistle 2 (Scottish Cup 5th Round)

  • Returning for a second loan spell, Lyle Taylor becomes the 35th player to appear for Partick Thistle this season, and the 26th to do so competitively.
  • Thistle introduce two half-time substitutes for the first time in a competitive game since 11th September 2010, a 2-1 loss at home to Stirling Albion.
  • Kris is involved in his 20th competitive substitution of the season.
  • Stephen provides an assist for the sixth time in this season's competitve games, cementing his position as this term's second biggest provider.
  • Lyle becomes the 16th different player to score in competitive games for Thistle in 2014-15.
  • In the 76th minute, Willie Collum became the first referee to use vanishing spray in a Partick Thistle match. The spray was carried by all referees appointed to this weekend's 5th Round Scottish Cup ties and will be introduced into all SPFL fixtures for the second half of the season. Scotland becomes the 13th European nation to use the spray, following on from its introduction at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
  • Thistle are now 8 games without a win under the whistle of Willie Collum.
  • Inverness CT equal their biggest ever victory at Firhill.
  • Thistle suffer back to back defeats for the first time since 26th March 2014, when a single goal defeat vs. Inverness CT on the Saturday was followed by a 1-5 defeat at home to Celtic on the Wednesday.

Great stuff. Most of us (and the media) have focused on the lack of back-to-back wins since we got promoted, but by turning it around and showing that we also haven't lost two on the trot for over 30 matches, you've made it clear that we can't be too bad a team!

So, 2 games after bringing up the topic of how long since back to back defeats, we have back to back defeats. Bloody typical.

For the realists:

  • Thistle have lost their last 14 top-flight meetings with Celtic.
  • In all competitions, Celtic have not conceded since before Christmas. They arrive on the back of 7 consecutive clean sheets, and 655 minutes of game time since a defensive breach.

For the dreamers:

  • Jags are just one victory away from the Heinz milestone vs Celtic. The beans are on ice.
  • Kris got the 97th, Christie got the 98th. Might tomorrow bring the 99th and 100th home League goals vs Celtic?

Can anyone settle an arguement..? Don't have a copy of "The Bible" ( ISBN 1874427593 ) handy.

Who scored more goals in one season, Gerry McCoy or Colin McGlashan? .... ( I say McCoy. I seem to remember, round about the time, someone saying that he'd scored more in one season than MoJo, though I think that might be bull'... I pretty sure "Dibble" never broke 20 but Gerry did ).

^ Answer: You decide, it depends on which way you choose to look at it! Most folks would ignore friendlies and say Gerry. As a historian, I think every goal for the PT first team is important and would therefore say Colin.

Season - Player - Total Goals [competitive + friendly]

Season 114 1988-89 Gerry McCoy - 23 [23 + 0]

Season 115 1989-90 Gerry McCoy - 4 [3 + 1]

Season 116 1990-91 Colin McGlashan - 12 [10 + 2]

Season 117 1991-92 Colin McGlashan - 26 [22 + 4]

Season 118 1992-93 Colin McGlashan - 2 [2 + 0]

In 1988-89, Gerry finished as Top Scorer in all 3 categories (all games, all competitive games and League games), with 20 in the League. He was the last Thistle player to get 20 in the League.

In 1991-92, Colin finished as Top Scorer in all 3 categories (all games, all competitive games and League games), with 19 in the League. Mark Roberts matched his 22 competitive goals tally in 2005-06, and these were the last two to go 20+ competitive in a season.

Maurice > Gerry & Colin!

Season 107 1981-82 Maurice Johnston - 11 [11 + 0]

Season 108 1982-83 Maurice Johnston - 36 [34 + 2]

Season 109 1983-84 Maurice Johnston - 16 [10 + 6]

Super Mo was top in all 3 categories for both 1981-82 and 1982-83. He got 21 in the League in 1982-83 - the highest League total since Willie Sharp got 22 in 1953-54.

My only worry is that if you start counting friendlies then Gerry Collins and his team go up in everybody's estimation. What a team that was right up until the first competitive kick of a ball.

A couple of useless stats that may dispel the belief that Thistle are inconsistent;
