Team shape was a whole lot better. Chalmers especially in the first half and Megwa especially in the second half brought a regular threat down the right to complement the usual Milne/Fitzpatrick combination down the left. One cross from either side, and Graham scores two.

Bannigan kept the team ticking over and O’Reilly was excellent as he has been for most of the season. Roberts’ recycling of the ball was quicker and more varied with less long punts.Β

There was much to be encouraged about, and if we can keep that same formation and put the constituent elements together more effectively and consistently, then I think that we could still get ourselves back into the title race.

However, having said all that we still made heavy weather of the win, even with the extra player. We were very fortunate when the apparent late equaliser was chalked off. The referee brought the game back to give a free kick to Airdrie, so if he had played advantage that would have been 2-2.

I’m not sure about this - it looked like linesman flagged for offside? But it was a confusing passage of play im not 100% what was goin on!

I was confused about that incident. I thought he played advantage as Muirhead fouled a player but then the player who scored was offside then he brought it back for the free kick.

First 30 minutes we were decent.

Chalmers was excellent and some of the stuff he was doing was worth the admission money alone, if his chip goes in we would be talking about that finish for a good while. Fitzpatrick was poor and no idea why he wasn't subbed and Chalmers left on.

Graham showed today that if the service is there he will score

After first 30 minutes we started firing a few long balls again and we lost possession which Airdrie capitalised on for their equaliser. Second half was pretty poor. At no point did we look in control of the game and at one stage we were playing against 9 men.

I fear the win papers over the cracks and allows Doolan to stagger on. I hope I'm wrong and that today is a corner turned.Β

Can anyone who was in the Jackie Husband tell us what Alan and John Hansen said when they were interviewed on the pitch?

As usual the tannoy was totally unintelligible in the John Lambie Stand.

The whole interview was spoiled by our ultras in the JL stand by them chanting unnecessaryΒ  through out the interview ,,,butΒ  what do 10 to 16 year olds no about the HANSEN Brothers........in a word NOTHING................Alan only the best player to have worn a Thistle Jersey........

No it wouldn’t, he was flagged offside.Β

Not sure it would as the linesman had flagged it offside.

Apart from that, though, they didn’t stop from about 2.30.Β

Positives. Moving the ball quicker. Passing and carrying ball thru midfield more effective. Graham less isolated. Thought energy levels improved considerably.

Negatives. Basically nothing new, just our usual failings resurfacing from time to time. Decision making still a bitΒ  dodgy and ball winning in midfield only marginally better.

Not going to be too critical re not making the game more comfortable against 10 men. You see other better sides than thus often enough struggle to score against teams a man down. We did resort to that deep defending we're often guilty of, tho' I thought the ref made some strange decisions against us late on resulting in loss of possession.

Thought today's Megwa/Chalmers partnership the nearest we've got to the McMillan/Lawless pairing. Falls short but still encouraging.Β

The context is we played the team at the bottom of the the league with 10 men for the last 30 minutes and were far from convincingΒ

All true.

However the context is also that we won the game. So the objective of playing the game has been achieved. No ifs and no buts about that.

Result over performance every time. The manager and the players can dissect the performance on Tuesday morning, as is their job to do so. The rest of us can enjoy our Saturday night knowing that we have another three points on the board.

Well, most of the rest of us can...................

To cut the ultras some slack, they would not have been able to hear anything of the interview (like the rest of us in the John Lambie).

Enjoy your night in Spain javeajag and don't get too stressed about the Jags..

The league is a marathon. 5th in October isn't worth worrying about. It's the position in April/May that counts.

Results like today's - irrespective of the flaws in performance - will be significant in achieving that target.

Still too many sloppy, loose passes but I thought that looked a lot better. Β The midfield pairing seemed the right decision, but I don’t understand why we still have such trouble advancing the ball in attack. Β So many times, the defenders would throw their arms up because there was no one to pass to, then hoof it up.

Β

That's right, and there's a culture within the midfield and defence of immediately stopping and turning back. I'd love to see a comparison of the number of forward vs. backwards passes by our team, I'd reckon we are top in the backwards stakes. And also the futile 2-yard sideways passes to and fro. There were times when we were on the "attack" and from the half-way line we made a series of passes all the way back to the goalkeeper, for no gain in territory, possession, or likelihood of scoring. It's dire to watch at times.

Having got that off my chest, there were some improvements. Megwa came on to a good game, and Chalmers' first-half display was excellent (the chip wasn't bad luck, it was a terrible miss!). BBG as usual fumbled, stumbled, and complained his way through the match but did what we love to see him doing... twice.

For me Turner is contributing too little at the moment: loses possession easily, few creative passes, nothing special at all from his dead pieces.Β

But overall, relief rather than excitement.

I had the privilege of watching Alan Hansen play for Thistle in the 1970s and am fully aware of his brilliant Thistle and Liverpool careers, not to mention his being a master of the art of football punditry. I am sure that many of our ultras are equally aware and appreciative of all this.

To come to their defence, after several seasons of a defective public address system which it seems cannot be fixed (whether this is due to lack of will or lack of funds I do not know), meaning that in the John Lambie Stand you have no idea what is being said, and usually no idea of who is saying it, you tend to zone out of whatever is happening in front of the Jackie Husband Stand, and focus on your own conversation, programme, pie, singing, reading the forum on your phone, or whatever.

I am sure that no disrespect was intended. It is just that the "platform party" might as well be on a different planet for those of us in the JLS.

Anyway, to end on a positive note, great to see Alan Hansen back in good health after all the concerns on that front only a few months ago.
