Reasons Our Managers Have Left In The Past

Given Jackie the tim's resignation in order to spend his next few years in the dump of Tannadice, I got to wondering whether we've ever previously lost a manager directly to another club, i.e. who got poached by another club. I can't think of any. They all usually end up getting the sack at some point. The legend that is Davie McParland resigned on a point of principle.

Oh, just remembered: Lambie jumped ship specifically to go to Falkirk, didn't he?

Any others?

Officially it was for a "fresh challenge". Falkirk appointed him as manager the next month, not sure if there was contact before.

Tommy Bryce - Sacked

John McVeigh - Sacked

Murdo McLeod - Sacked

John Lambie - "seeking a new challenge" joined Falkirk less than a month later.

Sandy Clark - Sacked

John Lambie - Left to join Hamilton Accies

Billy Lamont - Sacked

Derek Johnstone - Sacked

Bertie Auld - Sacked

Benny Rooney - Sacked

Peter Cormack - Sacked

Bertie Auld - Left to join Hibernian

Some real dross in there.

Lambie and McNamara are the only 2 successes in a number of years.

The previous board had a bad habit of appointing the wrong guy. Hopefully Beattie and co. can turn that around.

As someone said earlier, what an unbelievable list of shite managers ever since Bertie Auld (my time as a Jags fan). John Haggart has been left of the list (not surprisingly), slotted somewhere between Bertie's second era and Billy Lamont I think. For the true level of shitness to shine through, add up how many stayed in management after they were sacked by us. I make it two up to Jackie - if I'm wrong it's not by much. Shite indeed.

Any of you old times able to tell us what the point of principle was with McParland?

Following that list we aren't going to have anohter decent manager for a long long time.

Who are you calling Old times?? .

I'm fairly certain that it was a dispute with the board about adding Hugh Strachan to the Coaching staff. After 25 years with the club as player and manager, McParland resigned on a point of principle.

There was a promise made by the Board and it was reneged on regarding a coaching role for Hugh Strachan - as stated McParland resigned on a point of principle - no other Thistle manager in the modern era has done so as far as I am aware - then again no other Thistle manager has won a major trophy in the modern era either so McParland is pretty unique.

The break up of the 1971 cup winning team and the refusal to give him money to buy the players he believed would have taken us to a higher level.

that is not how I remember it, I'm sure it was because the club could not continue to afford to pay

Hugh Strachan his wages, Hugh was released and subsequently McParland left on principle

The only man of principle was evidently McParland - the rest deemed either incompetent or sought more money - that's football.

And look where that got him, he went to Celtic apparently to be the successor to Jock Stein, but when big Jock left Celtic, they did the dirty on Davie and appointed Billy MacNeill instead.

As this is fairly typical ol most clubs by and large. It does show that as far as managers are concerned you do have to look after number one usually.
