Ex-Jags Doing Well Elsewhere

Three on show at Tannadice yesterday: Penrice (scorer), Spittal (hit the bar), Holt. With the exception of the latter, we never got to see them really perform for us. Who are the others currently playing at a higher level? Nisbet, Docherty?....

Blair Spittal got player of the year with us - so he must have been putting in some decent performances for us

ATS no doubt bettered himself financially playing in English League One. Don't know if that division is considered a step up or not from our top tier?

Ryan Edwards scored a goal in a Scottish Cup Final with Hearts but you can hardly say he went on to have a glittering career.

Elliot had a fairly successful swansong at Dundee, winning a promotion and a final (albeit relegation) season in the top flight.

McMillan is a regular at Exeter in English L1 (under Caldwell). Reference to the Lady's comment above as to whether this is actually a step up.

McIver has done well since leaving and may very well be playing at a higher level next year.

English L1 is much higher than our level. Most Premiership teams would struggle. Our level would be around top end Conference/ bottom end L2

I expect that this is right. The fact that part-time teams regularly play (and are often competitive) at our level would bear this out.

Kevin Nesbit.

Always amazed me the transformation in him after he left us as he looked a waste of a wage while at Firhill. When he re-appeared at Raith Rovers he looked like he had lost about 2 stone and had an attitude transplant

Perhaps @Jordanhill Jag had him running up and down Cleveden Hill?

Maybe Diack should have a word with Nesbit.

Didn't Nesbit, after leaving the Jags, admit that while at Firhill he wasn't sure he wanted to be a professional footballer and that as a result his attitude was right.

I think things changed for him when he was on the end of some straight talking feim McGlynn. He was also a year older as well and perhaps a bit more mature

Well if its Good Enough for Laura Muir and Olympic Silver Medalist - its Good enough for Thistle

Fitness isn't complicated and you don't need Body Belts & “ Stats”

A problem with Nisbet was he had outgrown the youth set up physically and went out on loan before he was mentally attuned for the moves. I think that had a negative effect on the player that he didn't shake off. I don't believe he was particularly that unfit latterly with us but enough to convince Archibald to release him. If he hadn't gone to Raith a free agent I doubt he would have turned things around. Never in doubt was Kevin's ability to score goals and he always had the knack of taking up good positions for assists. I imagine the only serious doubt was about his attitude. Dropping two divisions was the best move he made.

A few names for the old timers to dwell on from the 1960s Jags.. My memory might not be that great in terms of the clubs they left us for.hey

Neil Duffy (my personal favourite  all time Jags player) left us to go to St Johnstone

Ian Cowan (left us to go to Falkirk)

Gordon Whitelaw (to Dundee Utd)

Billy Hainey (to Dundee Utd)

John Flannigan (to Clyde)

Tommy Gibb (to Newcastle Utd)

Sandy Brown (to Everton)

and from a later era:

Alex Forsyth (to Manchester Utd)

Alan Hansen (to Liverpool)

Ronnie Glavin (to Celtic)

Cowan, Duffy and Flannigan as far as I recall had their beat days with the Jags.

Brown and Gibb had mixed success enjoying some good times but never totally convincing the fans that they were the real deal.

Whitelaw, Hainey, Forsyth and Glavin all enjoyed success with their new clubs and definitively played at a higher level

Alan Hansen - became a Liverpool legend!

I am sure the above list can be added to and my views debated. But isn't that football!!

I always thought that James Penrice was under-rated when he was with us. The only one who has surprised me is McIver, although I didn't see he play in person.

Agree either you on this. I think both players were under-rated while at Firhill. I thought the circumstances around Penrice leaving were strange which suggested things weren't right behind the scenes. As much as I thought Ian McCall was a good manager for us I thought he made a mistake letting Penrice go.

Also with McIver I felt there was a player in there and we should have been more patient with him and given him more time.

To the earlier list we could add Joe McBride (to Motherwell and then others), Hugh Tinney (to Bury), Arthur Duncan (to Hibs).

From the League Cup winning team: Jimmy Bone (to Norwich), Denis McQuade (to Hearts)

And from later: Mo Johnston (To Watford), Jim Melrose (to Leicester City).

Regarding some of the older names, the thread title is players doing well since they left us. I think Denis McQuade is one that didn’t do well when he left. I think tbh Denis’s best days were behind him by then

I'm not sure about the circumstances around Penrice leaving were strange, particularly. We really wanted Tiffoney, and a straight swap was a straightforward solution. Otherwise we would have had to stump up cash for Tiff, which I doubt we would've been able to do. In other words, we effectively received a fee (in kind) for Penrice.

The earliest strike pairing I can recall watching at Thistle was Joe Craig and Doug Somner. Both eventually did well elsewhere, although not to the same extent as at Thistle. I think that Joe had a good season and a half with Celtic before going downhill via Blackburn and Hamilton. He never attained to the same prolificity as at Thistle. Doug did well enough at St Mirren to be inducted into their Hall of Fame as well as Thistle's (but he did score more for Thistle).
