James Marwood, the striker St. Mirren have signed from Gateshead, just tweeted someone saying Carl Magnay is signing for Partick Thistle. He's a 25 year old Northern Irish centre-half, started with Chelsea but been with Gateshead for a few seasons.

Just reading through some old tweets talking about his release from Gateshead, looks like they're pretty disappointed he's been released. Saw a comment praising his versatility - being able to play anywhere across the back.

Is he the boy that won his chelsea contract on a tv competition on sky one? Or am I thinking of someone else? If so, he looked good on that, never seen anything of him since.

Nothing on the Scunny fishul site about Taylor. Hopefully a drab news day for their Telegraph when they reported that. Beats me why LT would spurn the opportunity of an extended flat-share with the emerging charismatic legend that is Kallum Higginbotham. Furthermore, can't imagine the Irons have anything to offer Lyle that comes anywhere close to the clamorous adulation which readily awaits moments of magic from red'n'yella-clad icons.

If true, his loss.

Says he's had a couple of cruciate injuries.

At 6ft 1 I wouldn't say he's the big dominant Centre Half we need either.

Sums up Scottish football for me that you need to be bigger than 6ft 1 to be a CB in this country.

Not having a go at you for saying this, it's just the mindset throughout the game here which differs from countries that are miles in front of us in both technique and ability.

He might even be able to jump like a 6ft 4 Centre Half :)

Get what you're saying but if he could jump like a 6ft 4 centre half then he wouldn't have been playing with let alone being released by Gateshead.

The coach of Gateshead might have the dinosaur mentallity of some of our coaches in believing nobody can be a CB if they are only 6ft 1

Don't know anything about the lad but his height is not the main thing he needs to be a good CB and other things are more important.

Ross Perry has been released and is 6ft 2 but this certainly doesn't make him a good CB :)

You will need to wait and see what the boy brings to a game and the Thistle defence and also trust the manager if he thinks he will be an asset for his team.

Magnay on trial according to the ET.

I'm a little disappointed that we've been unable to sign someone outright to replace ATS or Mair without having the possibility of a Summer of revolving door trialists.

That & fact we've missed out on Taylor.

1 signing in place out of 6 that the manager wanted & we're at the trialist stage.

Have to agree. We didn't miss out on Taylor. We never stood a chance. I'm not sure that of all the players being signed up by other clubs that we have "missed out" on anyone. We got the big prize we wanted in Stevenson and I fully expect a couple of players to come back from the training camp who will be able to talk to Gabby and Collina in their native tongue.

Archie will get it sorted.

Same height as Lee Mair, according to Wiki:

I thought Mair was pretty dominant during his brief spell with us, and held the defence together on a few occasions, IMHO.

Agree with this.

I am possibly oversimplifying things here but Gary Medel played centre-half for Chile in the World Cup and is barely 5ft 8ins. Fabio Cannavaro, arguably one of the best players to have played in that position in recent years, is only an inch taller.

Ok. Wouldn't disagree so why not keep Mair on instead of bringing in someone with no experience of the Scottish game?

Besides if he's only on trial it suggests that we don't have a specific target in mind despite releasing the guy the management team chased last Summer eventually getting him in Jan. No?

Not having a go at the management team. Think we should have a scouting network in place & ready to sign players instead of relying on them falling into our laps by walking in the door on trial.

Not that I distrust Archie's judgment but I used to dread hearing that expression when emanating from the mouth of Dick Campbell. A bunnetism for canny hold down any one defensive position. More to the point is Magnay naturally left sided? Rather unusual expression when referring to a left sided player

It's not a comment that bothers me. McMillan is one of those - who can fill in at CB or LB. And I think he's worth starting at RB. It's also good to know Muirhead can go in at RB if need be. Yet for someone like Piccolo, I wouldn't be too comfortable with him at LB or RB. So it's good to know who can do a job where across the defence.

I wonder if he's the only one joining us on trial from the start of pre-season.
