Don't know if Taylor falls into that bracket, maybe a fans perspective, but was he not one of the ones Collins gave a tag line to.. Like:

 

McBride. Best passer of the ball in the SPL.

Anis. The speed of a gazelle.

are any of these answers valid to the OP? I think in most cases when we sign a player we hope for the best, there are very few I can think of as being of the 'oh no why are signing him?' variety. The only one that really springs to mind for me was Brannigan

There was a guy during Lambies era who was played as a trialist for about 30 mins before being hooked, never to be seen as a Thistle player again. Can't remember his name.

Big striker - McMahon if I remember correctly who had played in Hong Kong. Played as if he had a wooden leg
