Amoo as usual lacked fire and while everyone is willing Azeez to score maybe he is just not very good. Osman increasingly lumbers about midfield contributing little positive, Barton is a much better central defender than midfielder and Edwards runs about without influencing the game. Welsh, Fraser & Bannigan would improve the midfield. Doolan & Erskine were obvious substitutes and they changed the game. Great crosses from Erskine & Booth and two typically well taken headers from Dools. It was a comfortable win in the end though we didn't have to be great to beat a plodding Hamilton side. But his tackling, heading and marking was superb all game. Credit to Archie for realising that the doolan sub didn't change the game and for bringing on erskine. Chris completely changed the game after that are we stretched their back 4. Him and booth worked well together. Wonder what folk thought of the yellow card when doolan got through on the left? A player who can put his foot on the ball, create space and remove the need to get it 'launched up the park'. Without him, our play in the first half descended into a horrible head-tennis war of attrition. No grip on the midfield at all. However, Archie got it spot on subs-wise. I thought Amoo would provide the pace but Hamilton had clearly seen what he did to St Johnstone last week and he was way too close to Muzzy. Amoo doesn't work as a striker as proven today. Doolan and Erskine changed the game, not just by being creative outlets but by creating space for Lawless by drawing players away from him. Dumbuya had a good game but only so much you can do at right back. Good to see Archie willing to change things positively mid game several times. Hamilton really are absolutely terrible. Lambies Lost Doo Posted February 18, 2017 Report Share Posted February 18, 2017 Looked to be 4-2-3-1 starting. Barton and Osman the midfield 2 with Edwards as "Number 10" role supporting Ade. It just wasn't working. Amoo was having an off day, he's a better player than he thinks he is, needs more confidence to take on players. I rate him but he is up and down. Full backs were not able to really get into the game and as others have said the first half was scrappy and a pretty horrible spectacle all round. 2nd half fair play to Archie he made changes. 5-2-3??? Barton back in defence as sweeper coming forward. Edwards and Osman in midfield and then Dools, Ade and Lawless. Erskine came on and the holy trinity were back in business. Edwards is better buzzing around and breaking up play. Erskine conjours up magic and the full back pushed up more with 2 great corners and 2 great headers from Dools. Happy days. If that's the case then that's terrible news for the player and the team. Personally think his current form is his best as a Jag. The only good thing to come out of the 1st half was the performance of the defence; Devine and Lindsay were excellent throughout the whole game and Barton is just class. As most have said the introduction of Doolan and Erskine really turned the match. Edwards and Lawless performances picked up accordingly. Deserved the win on the 2nd half performance. Pure guess work but I reckon if we had decided on a three at the back as a starting formation Barton would've played in midfield with Keown at the right side of a back three. Given the performances today of Lindsay and in particular Devine that could've proved a missed opportunity. On a similar vein I very much doubt Archie would've wanted to play a two upfront of Azeez and Amoo. That was more the price to be paid for changing the formation midway thru the first half. If anything Archie could've subbed Amoo for Dools earlier but I feel the real turning point was the introduction of Erskine at a time which I thought was spot on. Azeez was if nothing else tiring the Accies back line and making it that bit easier for Doolan and Erskine to more or less tear Accies apart. If allowed my MotM today would be Alan (no Plan B Archibald. Coming on the back of last week's "no full back 3-4-3" can we finally put the rather inane myth that this fella doesn't know how to change a game (before and/or during) to bed? Not disagreeing but I think if we start with a back three it'll be as we played at McDiarmid. You've got the bonus of withdrawing Barton into defence as and when necessary and the undoubted benefits he brings to the midfield. Perhaps the negatives we showed today for much of the game from a creativity point of view could be put down to having neither Barton or Welsh in midfield? It is worth watching the highlights closely to see how far back the moves started, the number of players involved, and how many good touches and accurate passes were made. Erskine getting in front of the defender for the first, and Booth just about ending himself with a lungbursting run for the second, two beautiful chipped crosses, and what more can we say about Kris Doolan? Archie has developed as a manager this year especially through adaptability. The team now appears able to switch seamlessly between different systems which shows what a shrewd coach he is becoming. The signing of Barton clearly helps because here we have a player with tremendous all round ability and a great attitude. How the Hell did we manage to attract a player if this quality? Credit also to Welsh, Edwards, and the centre backs for being able to adapt to changing circumstances whether this is because if the opposition line up or because our Plan A is not working. It could be that players like Welsh and Barton have an input to this in training. But Archie appears much more tuned in to tactical changes and better substitutions this season. We really were superb after Erskine came on but I am not convinced that we would have been so dominant had we started with the team that finished. Interesting point about Azeez as the argument rages on. Most of our moves seemed to end when Ade received possession but my goodness, he runs the 2 central defenders ragged. 6 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Regarding Sunday's games, I hate the part of myself which will be willing on the hvns and sheep fornicators today, but needs must. I just want to pick up on a point made above about Jags fans forgetting about other teams' results, and focusing on our own affairs: speaking for myself, I'm never away from the latest league standings and fixtures, especially on match days, trying to work out what this and that goal will do for our position in the table etc. I would've thought that most of us do that to some extent, because we're obsessed with what it means for Thistle. Sure, we concentrate on team selection, the form of Thistle players, starting line-ups etc, but everything's relative, and when there's barely a baw hair between 6th and the dreaded 11th place, it's of vital importance what's happening with the teams round about us.
