Benny Rooney has passed away

Recommended Posts

Another piece of Partick Thistle history departs the scene and with it some lovely memories! A terrier like player who had a very steady career with several clubs and then becoming Thistle manager where his timing was lousy! He had to take over just after relegation and 2 near misses with promotion.  He had a total rebuild to oversee and thankfully we did enough to avoid falling further down the ladder. Alongside his trusted lieutenant Mike Jackson he uncovered a few wee gems to wear the strip (a rather plain one sadly!) including the very talented John Donnelly, who must be up there in terms of most skilled players.  Benny is strongly associated with Morton but he will also be remembered as a very strong team man for the Jags and that will go down in history.

incidentally it changes the answer to the question of who is our oldest living manager - that honour which Benny held now passes on to Peter Cormack.

God Bless Benny Rooney

I seem to remember Bertie Auld saying of the team that was promoted in 75/76(?) that whilst much of the praise went to Rough, Hansen A., Somner and Craig (and rightly so), Benny could “dig in” and steady the team through difficult times. As far as I remember, that was a fair assessment of Benny’s contribution - a wise steady experienced old head tutoring the younger, perhaps more talented but less experienced, members of the team.
He wasn’t always the darling of the crowd but his industry was certainly there for all to see.

RIP
