Lets hope so and back to us.  He didn’t get much game time previously but there is a cracking player in there.

Agree… and another player so comfortable on the ball….imagine him and OReilly at centre backs with McBeth in midfield… not much would get through that!

Oakley signs at Ayr. Could mean we keep Dowds.

I thought Dowds was pretty much no more than a deadwood carthorse before he went to Ayr. But he seemed to do well there.

Let's not forget that Doolan did not set the heather alight when he went to Clyde (?) on loan, but when he returned to Firhill......... well, history speaks for itself!

If Dools retains him, let's give him a chance to flourish.

You’re probably right on Middlesbrough. I’m sure Wee Bertie mentioned Man City as well. Happy to be corrected as the memory is not as good as it was. And Jim Stewart couldn’t lace Roughie’s boots

Hi Garryc.

I wasn't  correcting you. I was just saying I didn't know about the Man City and Liverpool interest in Alan Rough.

There was a well publicised interest from Middlesborough. Their Manager  at the time was John Neal and it turned out he was, IMO, stringing the Jags and Rough along while secretly negotiating with Kilmarnock to sign Jim Stewart. Clearly deceitful and unethical practice.

Is Zak Rudden a totally ridiculous suggestion or is there too much historical baggage there?

I don't fancy the idea of Rudden returning to the Jags. The manner of his leaving still annoys me.

We should be trying to sign players who have

the potential to play in the SPL. Rudden is at best a Championship/League 1 striker- as Dundee gave discovered.

I would take Turner, Holt, Tiffoney and Docherty back if  they ever become available.

Love the expression "deadwood carthorse". Both "deadwood" and "carthorse" individually are fairly conventional descriptions for football players, but putting them together is sheer genius!

I agree with the above.

I always thought there was much more of a player in Dowds than we ever saw or was allowed to flourish at Firhill.

I think Doolan should bring him back from Ayr and work to integrate him into the first team squad and make him feel wanted.

Altogether now..."The deadwood carthorse stage is coming right over the hill..."

Our history is full of players who struggled at the top level with other clubs but were successful for us. And vice versa.

Don’t think Dowds will resign for us , not sure Dools rated him as there were times he wasn’t even on the bench.

His stats for Ayr look impressive 13 goals and 7 assists in 27 games

Definitely a player in there but not sure he would start ahead of Brian Graham

They certainly beat us to the signing of Oakley. Dowds? Not so sure of.

Not just saying this because they didn't sign, but i am not bothered that we didn't get them. We will need another striker as Graham might get injured or a drop in form. The problem is everybody knows Graham will start everything being ok with him.

Agree with this. Both Oakley and Dowds would have been "Graham-lite".

What we really need is a different sort of striker who can both challenge Graham, but also play alongside him from time to time, meaning that we can vary our tactics.

Doolan will remember that having contrasting strikers served us well, thinking back to his contests and/or co-operation with Steven Craig and Lyle Taylor. Ade Azeez was less prolific, but was the foil to Doolan in our most successful season.

Between Oakley and Dowds, Ayr look like they've starting to assemble a really good squad already. Still hoping that we aren't putting all our eggs in one basket with Graham. Need another proven goalscorer - shame, as I still rate Dowds and it's a shame to lose him to a rival who will be playoff contenders

I agree but I don't feel Dowds would be a good fit for us. That doesn't of course mean he won't be a success at Ayr and a have an effective partnership with Oakley. Think we need a nippy striker to compliment Graham and Diack. Ideally a fella that can play wide when needed. We need two wide attackers in any case. So if one could also play thru the middle and be a goal threat, so much the better

Ayr fans on p and b think they have won next seasons title and boasting they have beat us to two of our targets. We will see. :fan:

Were they even our targets? Paper talk mentioned Oakley but did we even speak to him? As for Dowds, he was never an option to come back. I think that was clear in January
