Thistle vs Livingston

As has been said …..this was the first time all season we have had a compact and solid midfield which has been a key weakness for so long.

the new recruits fitted in well with Martin particularly impressing.

grounds for optimism.

The two main things I took from last night (if we can repeat our performance with our improving fitness) were that first, we should be able to claim a playoff spot, and second that we have a good chance of promotion.

I actually enjoyed the game last night. Yes, we should have won, but the improved performance was the most pleasing aspect.

Good display by the defence, out with Megwa's moment . Ashcroft really solid in the air and O'Reilly's brilliant tackle set up the break for our goal. I've never seen a goalkeeper at Firhill that is as comfortable with the ball at his feet as Budinaukas. He's yet to be really tested shot wise so too early to judge him on that and he doesn't look the most commanding at crosses, but time will tell.

I thought the midfield were decent, especially without the ball. Crawford full of running as usual and Scott Martin showed why the Hamilton fans rated him so highly. He did tire but, if he can get fitter, he'll be a real asset. I was watching him for a bit during the game and, very like Ross Docherty, he marks space well and anticipates where the play is heading. I can see him being a very popular player.

Logan Chalmers is growing in confidence each game and is causing every team problems. We are seeing now what we expected when he was signed. Good showing again last night and superb cross for Graham's goal.

On Brian Graham - I don't think I've ever seen his link up play as good as I have over the last two games. Funny that. It shows what he is actually capable of when he puts the team first. Great finish for the goal and good efforts with his head in the second half.

I thought the game changed when Livi put on Stephen Kelly. He doesn't seem to have played much recently, not sure if he's been injured or not? I think it was a mix of him starting to control the game and us not using our substitutes at the right time. We definitely put a lot in to the first hour or so and fresh legs should have been used, and not just in midfield. We really fell off the pace the last 20 minutes could have ended up losing the game.

Regardless of result, it was a good feeling to enjoy watching a match again, something that I haven't been able to say at all this season. We should be OK for 4th, if we continue to put in the same effort in remaining games.

ETA - The referee really should be embarrassed with himself for that performance. Shameful.

I think Graham has always put the team first. His link up play has been better the past couple of games, as there is now a midfield to link up with. It is hard to link up with a hole.

Agree there. I posted early in the thread that I'd take a draw as long as the performance levels were increased. So I've no major complaints re last night. Played far more as a team.

Minor point but I thought on Saturday Graham was wrong to sub himself so early. Last night I thought he should've gone off before the end. We could've done with a bit more possession up the field later on. The line up and selection worked well and nullified Livingston for much of match. I'm guessing we'll tweak that slightly in coming games. Just a wee bit more positive?

What a difference a week makes, it's hard to believe that's the same team we have been watching, suffering, for the past few months , got to be the best we have played all season, pity it's nearly the end and not the beginning.. onwards and upwards..

Maybe now is the time to come good? The next 3 games are so important. If we can make the playoffs I don’t fear Ayr or Livvy. I’m not sure about Falkirk but I think they’ll be Champions.

Last night was definitely an improvement and maybe Martin is just the midfielder we’ve been missing? McBeth did well too.

Logan Chalmers wrapped up the player of the month award. Good touch from Brian Graham in the JagZone interview, deflecting all the praise from himself to Chalmers.

Really enjoyed the game last night. The team put everything into it and won a much higher percentage than usual of 50-50 balls. Only question mark would be as regards the lack and lateness of substitutions. JagZone highlights well illustrate the balance of play with Livingston becoming dominant in the final 25 minutes as Thistle tired.

Referee very lenient with Livingston's constant fouling in first half. A few deserved bookings then may have resulted in sendings off in the second half.

Does anyone know what the white thing Ashcroft wears around his head?  Is he recovering from a particular head injury.

If so even more impressive as he has never shirked a challenge all season

Split his head open in a reserve game months ago. Assume it’s just for protection.

Would be good to see Chalmers and McKay in the same team- anyone have any idea when he's back from injury?

Not complaining, but what has happened to Raith ?

Good set of results for us today, the only slight quibble being that I would have preferred Queens Park not to gain so much goal difference.

Queens Park, Raith and Morton are all going to have to look behind as well as in front, as Hamilton and Dunfermline are creeping up.

Feel that just not losing next up at Hampden would be a major step towards our quest for 4th place.

Raith Rovers away at Livingston and Queens park at home to Ayr midweek. So by the time we play Queens park we will have played the same amount of games and the picture might be a bit clearer for what we need to do to get 4th. Play as we did for 70 minutes or so last night we should achieve it imo.

Kind of agree with this. QP play Ayr this week before their cup game with Aberdeen next weekend. It’s a tough week for them, I think.

I think after last night's draw with Livingston today's results went our way. Morton and Raith both losing and although Queens gave Raith a battering we actually increased our lead over these clubs by a point.

Although Morton, Queens and Raith have a game in hand they don't have easy games with our closest challengers for 4th place playing,

- (Raith) away to Livingston

- (Queens) at home to Ayr

-(Morton) at home to Ayr.

As we don't play again until the 11th March we have 10 days to improve fitness levels. Hopefully this will mean that when we turn out versus Queens Park, we should with the smart use of the bench, be able to play for 90 minutes and be hopeful of actually winning the game.

Not so sure how much Fitzpatrick will play currently.  But as it has been posted on social media (as Aidan has posted about it in public domain) i think its understanding that Fitzpatricks mind has been elsewhere for some time due to understandably family situation and hence why he has been clearly distracted at games.  Its clearly in these situations that there are more important things in life than football.  Thoughts with Aidan and the family at a difficult time, especially Mrs Fitzpatrick and im sure if he plays much before the end of the season he will have the full support of all the fans
