I think Doolan will make one change from last week, bringing in Bannigan (or maybe Stanway) for McInroy. Assuming no new injuries. Several teams will now have us in their sights, including Morton, Airdrie, Dunfermline, all chasing a playoff spot, with the later two now having momentum. After today we have just 3 games at Firhill, ICT, Airdrie and Ayr. Tough away schedule to Dunfermline, Raith and Utd after the aforementioned Arbroath. Therefore essential we start picking up points today and next week against Arbroath then ICT. As for those who “would be happy to finish mid table this season”, it raises an interesting point. Let’s imagine Doolan was tasked with just that as a minimum based on whatever his budget was. The fact that we have been sitting quite comfortably in 3rd for so long, if we were to mis out on a playoff would undoubtedly feel like failure regardless of any alleged mid table “target”. And that could result in fewer ST sales next year as the earlier “feel good factor” diminishes. But hopefully we get back on track today. It does go to show how quickly a bad run can end. The Pars looked in real danger and couldn’t buy a win, now they are the form team. Morton’s promotion form has turned to nearer relegation form. Almost every team (top 2 apart) has had a really bad run at one stage now. Sorry but he had a new manager bounce and it lasted a bit longer than it should have, he’s now been found out as clueless. Always a Club Legend just isn’t a manager. Not going today no sitting watching it again. Our midfield is absolutely shocking, the boy Macbeth’s just in the door from junior fitbaw, he might come good given time. Stanway should be starting before anyone in that midfield he’s a least mobile. Anytime we give the ball away and the other team break we are the so slow getting back in the middle of the park, it just puts an already shite CB pairing under more pressure. Maybe it's time to think about the way Luke McBeth plays-he has that 'kick the fecker hard' Juniors approach ( though it very nearly got him sent off on Tuesday) and some of our other players could maybe learn a bit from him. Regardless of where finish in the league, the manager for next season has a massive rebuilding job on their hands. Recruitment this season has been poor. This is probably due to a combination of factors (budget, Doolan's inexperience, being late to the market due to play-offs). If we do achieve promotion this season, it will almost certainly be through the play-offs. So, again, recruitment will be hamstrung. We would be late to market and our budget almost certainly the smallest of the Premiership clubs. I fear that, under those circumstances, our stay in the top league would be brief. Of course I want Thistle to be successful. I want to see us competing with the best teams in the country (and beyond) - and after thirty plus years of support, I believe it is my right! Rather that categorise my position as 'would be happy to finish mid table this season', I would say this; I want the club's finances to be stabilised, a sustainable squad building regime in place and a management team that will use these resources effectively. I was in the JL stand so might of missed something, but I thought McBeth’s booking was for pulling a player back (albeit rugby style) to prevent a quick counter attack rather than any kicking hard. I don’t agree with most of this. If Doolan truly was that bad at both recruitment and tactics we would not be third. If our midfield was that bad we wouldn’t score so many goals. I’m not even sure recruitment is as bad as made out. I quite like Robinson, Neilson, McInroy, Adeloye, McBeth, Ngenwa and even Williams (I think I rate the latter more than Doolan though). Yes many have been patchy, but most have made a positive impact on at least a few games (even Alston despite being a strange, superfluous signing) and have contributed to our point total. Only McDonald and Stewart look truly terrible. I’m not pretending that everything is great or that mistakes haven’t been made or that recruitment was brilliant (none of the recruits have been outstanding either).
